Udupi, Jun 30: With a total weight of 857 kg Anna Bhagya rice of value Rs 29,138 was seized transported illegally by Hiriyadka police on June 29.

The accused are identified as Devaraj (38) resident of Shivamogga and Santhosh (37) resident of Hebri. Nimbanna and Hanumatha were caught in the vehicle who said they were there to help the accused to assist unloading the rice bags.

Plaintiff Pravesh Kumar(24) workd in Udupi taluk food department, informed Hiriyadka Police about illegal transport of Anna Bhagya rice from Berampalli towards Perdoor in a Etcher lorry. He then informed to the higher authorities as per the order by higher officials. Food head Asha K along with Pravesh Kumar, sub-inspector and other police staff stopped the vehicle moving towards Perdoor-Harikand near Perdoor Annalu Bridge. After checking the vehicle they found two people Nimbanna and Hanumantha sitting in the back side of lorry with 31 bags, total of 857kg Anna Bhagya rice covered with tarpaulin.

The accused purchase rice from Anna Bhagya beneficiaries and sell it at high price in the market. The police seized Etcher lorry KA-20-AA-4564 and 857kg Anna Bhagya rice and registered a case in Hiriyadka police station.
