Udupi, Jul 1: “We should never allow caste to interfere in our work and neither should communal means or dharma disturb us. We should look at everyone equally without corruption and also the field we chose is more important than money,” said Hariprasad A, editor-in-chief of Suddiyana digital media.

Speaking on the occasion of Press Day celebrations at a function organised by Udupi District Working Journalists’ Association, Udupi, Hariprasad said, “Media is a mirror of society. When politicians started owning the media two aspects came up - news and views. Journalists should be journalists and need not be an activist. We should enjoy all types of comments we get. We see news get repeated because there are different viewers who consume news at different times so the news gets repeated. Ethics learnt in the class must be followed as an individual. Delivering facts is an important aspect in media.”

Inaugurating the programme, Rashmi S R, sub-divisional officer, Kundapura, said, “Pre-independence press played a major role. For me they are like eyes and ears. They never write a story without knowing the fact they always do a thorough investigation and then write the story. Pen is mightier than sword, the words written will have a lot of impact. Journalism students must always go by heart.”

Ajjamada Ramesh Kuttappa, president Karnataka working journalist association, Bengaluru said, “Kannada paper was started to conduct an election campaign. Today digital media is leading. Media shows both the positive and negative side. Media is like an ocean. From the top it looks simple but when we go deep we find different things. When we go to an event for reporting we must go like a blank white paper. We must always think what we can give to society.”

Rajesh Shetty Alevoor, president, Udupi District Working Journalists Association, in his presidential address informed about holding a session from ninth grade till second PUC students in Udupi on journalism to create awareness about the subject. He appreciated journalists for maintaining ethics. He expressed his joy for leading and being a president at the time of 25th year celebration.

The event began with an invocation song sung by Vinisha, a student of Mahatma Gandhi Memorial College.

Senior Reporter Radhakrishna was felicitated.

Nazeer Polya, chief secretarym Udupi District Working Journalists’ Association welcomed the gathering. Mohammed Shareef Karkala, convener, silver jubilee committee gave introductory speech and Umesh Marpalli, treasurer Udupi District Working Journalists’ Association proposed the vote of thanks.
