Mangaluru: Driving of vehicles by minors - Police conduct awareness programme for parents

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, Jul 3: ACP Geeta Kulkarni of traffic department said that the parents should think twice before allowing children to run vehicles.

Kulkarni was speaking at an awareness programme for parents that was organized on Sunday July 2 at the south traffic police station of the city at Jeppinamogaru.

Geeta further said, “Parents should think of the consequences that will arise by giving vehicles to children. If children driver vehicle and involve in accident or are caught by police while checking, case will be filed against the person in whose name the vehicle is registered. Children should be reared so that they listen to the parents. If it is not possible, inform the nearest police station, our personnel will do the work of convincing children.

“Last week, two young boys died at Maryhill. A case is registered on the father of the deceased boy, who was riding the scooter. Now he has to face the police inquiry along with the pain of losing his son,” she said.

Police inspector Ramesh H Hanapura said, “If life is lost it cannot be revived. So precautions should be taken before any mishap occurs.”

Kuldeep Kumar Jain, police commissioner said, “Counselling sessions were held with parents in four traffic police stations. Around 79% of parents participated and agreed positively.”

Counselling sessions were held for 160 narcotic drug addicts in all police stations under the limits of city commissionerate on Sunday. Doctors, psychological counsellors and police officers held group and one to one discussions with the addicts. The police commissioner said that they have got good response and sessions of this nature will be held after observing the results.

Many a times I have witnessed that moms encourage their young sons aged aged below 12/14 to drop them to go to market or to school/office to the main roadside to enable them to catch the bus without anticipating the danger of accidents. Even these young boys dont wear the helmets. Anybody may pity on them white driving a two wheeler carrying a hefty body of his mom . It may be a pleasure for him to ride the vehicle but why the parents take such a risk for such drops.

Very good initiative by our Police department to create awareness of vehicle safety. These days many parents find it prestigious and status affair to give high end vehicles to their minor children. Not many parents realize the value of children's lives may be, but they are more concerned about the value of vehicles they provide their children. Police department is doing a great job. But Traffic Police should have stringent rules like seize the vehicle with documents, book the minors and the parents. Levy huge penalties. It is better loose money than a life. My concern always has been, like, even after seeing, watching, reading news, about deaths following rash, reckless and fast driving by youth, why on earth these people do not understand the seriousness of this issue? Hope parents learn it the hard way

Laws must be made stricter and that is the only one that will deter violations... Any counselling will not work as efficiently as stringent jail terms/hefty fines...

Awareness program is very good, but don't put pressure on parents. Otherwise the results will be worst . Now a days it is a fashion riding teen age students. My opinion is Police only can control this. Police must cease all vehicle riding by teenagers. Then in all Colleges camara should be installed . Police must avoid rift at home by police and parents. Vehicles should cease for at least 3 months.
