Mangaluru: New batch of Kalakul repertory commences , 'Emmaus' play staged

Media Release

Mangaluru, Jul 3: "Children are losing interest in arts which has led to the closure of the Arts section in many colleges. Everyone prefers joining the engineering, medicine, commerce and administrative sections. Sociology, psychology, philosophy are essential subjects for life. Where would our society reach without the knowledge of these? In such a situation, it's a matter of great pride that Mandd Sobhann has restarted Kalakul. These 8 students have bravely come forward to study theatre. I would like to give you'll three suggestions. Firstly, observe people. There are stories and dramas in their feelings. Secondly, take up the habit of reading. It has the power of leading you towards completeness. Thirdly, watch multilingual dramas. A vast range of dramas in different languages are available on social websites. Learn with enthusiasm and take Konkani theatre to greater heights", said Dr Alwyn Serrao, principal of St Anthony College, Naravi, on the occassion of launching the new batch of Kalakul, at Kalangann, Shaktinagar, on July 2.

Kalakul, the first theatre repertory in Konkani, was established in 2008. It has trained over 100 artistes in 12 batches, and has presented 250 shows of 52 plays. The repertory, which had taken a pause due to Corona, has restarted with zeal. Anita Flavia Menezes Bantwal, Darwin Liston Alvares Vamanjoor, Franklin Christon Castelino Panir, Joyson D'Souza Talapady, Varshita Flora Shaktinagar, Venisha Jessica Saldanha Gurupur, Winson Mathias Kirem, Vishal D'Souza Surikumeri are the members of the 2023-24 batch. This is a one year diploma course and experts in various fields of theatre will train the artistes.

Mandd Sobhann office bearers - Eric Ozario, Louis Pinto, Kishore Fernandez, Stany Alvares were present on the dais. Kalakul Administrator Arun Raj Rodrigues compered the programme.

This was followed by the 259th monthly theatre, 'Emmaus' - a play by Team Astitva. The play revolved around 2 characters and depicted their life experiences, such as abuse, failure, depression and attraction towards suicide and how they struggle to come overcome it. This play had bagged the first prize in the "New Konkani Play Writing Competition" organised by Mandd Sobhann. The play written by Dr Alwyn Serrao was directed by Christopher D'Souza Neenasam and enacted by Clanwin and Sweedel. Anstin Machado arranged music for the play and was backed by Yashasvin, Chinmay and Ketan. Lighting was managed by Angels Padil and sound by Surabhi Sounds. Globelink West Star Shipping LLC were the sponsors of this monthly theatre.
