Bantwal, Jul 4: Hill near Gadiyara government school adjacent to national highway near Mani collapsed due to the incessant rain that is lashing the taluk since some days. Now the situation is precarious as huge electricity tower is on the edge of the collapsed hill and there is also school next to the tower.

The hill was excavated during B C Road-Addahole four lane highway work. Due to this the hill collapsed further and now the school and electricity tower are standing on the edge of the hill. Public is furious against the highway authorities who have created this situation.

Holiday was declared to school on Monday as a safety measure. Officials of NHAI and the contracting company of highway work visited the collapsed hill area and assured of corrective action. Tahsildar B S Koodalagi, BEO Jnanesh and chief of KNRC company, which has taken the contract of highway work were there in the team.

The team of officials had discussions with Sadananda T M, head master of the school and villagers and took decision to take corrective action.

It is learnt that the work to build a retainer wall will begin from Tuesday and the same is given in writing.

Unscientific and impromptu construction involving labour category employees gives rise to several mishaps... Proper study of the existing surrounding structures and type of terrain is lacking here... Same is the case with underpass excavation for Udupi Santhekatte cross... Problem is that local elected MP,MLA get a major cut in such works and hence safety and quality are compromised until works face a closure threat....

If you consider the topography of coastal Karnataka, experts should have been consulted especially in critical areas like hill cutting, sinking soil etc. As years go by, one can expect more such catastrophic events wherever this type of jobs is done because the loosening of soil has started partly due to rampant deforestation on the adjoining hills!!

Hills are cut and excavated vertical -- height equivalent to several floors of a regular building -- -- or sometimes digging in using excavators -- -- a sort of U cavity -- -- It does not require great engineering knowledge that this will collapse -- especially with all trees cut -- nothing to hold and heavy rains which is not new however in Dakshina kannada----- same issue on all highways -- and western ghats --- - In general a gradual slope say 45 degrees will ensure least damage -- with retaining wall -- stone pitching ----( anyway there are road or highway engineers who know better but sadly are not consulted or bypassed -- )-- NOW possibly not to give extra compensation a little more land not acquired -- or vested interests ---

Bangalore - Mysore Highway has seen 132 fatal accidents since January this year, which is unusually high and points towards unscientific construction and no proper check on overspeeding and rash driving!
