Sensex Continues to Fall; Metal, Energy Stocks Slump


Mumbai, Jul 28 (IANS): A benchmark index for Indian equities markets slumped further Thursday, trading deep in the red for the third straight day after the Reserve Bank of India hiked key policy rates.

The 30-scrip sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which opened in the red at 18,300.55 points, was ruling at 18,296.02 points in the afternoon session, down 0.74 percent or 136.23 points from its previous close at 18,432.25 points.

The Sensex touched a low of 18,207.60 points and high of 18,327.85 points in the intra-day.

The 50-scrip S&P CNX Nifty of the National Stock Exchange was also trading nearly one percent down at 5,492.40 points in the afternoon session.

Major losers on the Sensex were: RIL, down 2.72 percent at Rs.837.30; Jaiprakash Associates, down 2.28 percent at Rs.70.70 and Sterlite Industries, down 2.23 percent at Rs.164.20.
