Mangaluru: Youth dials up emergency response service 112 to report theft of footwear

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (SS)

Mangaluru, Jul 19: A youth dialled up emergency response service 112 and called up the police after he lost his footwear that he had kept outside an auditorium on Sunday, July 17.

The youth who had come to an auditorium near the Sharavu Temple had parked his footwear outside the hall and when he returned he found it missing. Immediately, he called up 112 service after which the police arrived. On examining the CCTV footage it was found that another youth had worn the footwear and walked away.

The police have registered a complaint and are now on the lookout for the youth who stole the footwear, it is learnt.

Many citizens questioned the rationale and necessity of calling the police for a silly reason such as this because when there are more serious crimes to tackle the police may not respond favourably or react accordingly while criticising the youth over his behaviour while many others felt it was necessary for the emergency response service to respond to even such calls.

It was not known whether the youth had mischievous intent over calling 112 or because the footwear that he had worn was an expensive one.

Mangaluru police have received a number of calls on 112 following a campaign launched by the police in the recent past over using the service. It has become imperative for the police to attend to all such calls that it receives.

"The police have responded positively and taken the complaint of footwear theft after we were alerted on 112. The CCTV footage is being examined. Though a few calls may seem silly, the intent behind such acts might be serious as it is likely to disturb the social peace and so it becomes necessary for the police to visit the spot and examine the case," said Mangaluru city police commissioner Kuldeep Kumar R Jain.

Flicking footwear from outside religious places is very common in Mumbai; many devotees usually keep one chappal in one place and another in a different place so that they do not get robbed! Best is to wear cheap chappals when going to places of mass congratulations!

I don'tknow whether to laugh or pity the fellow. Where did he keep the pair of shoes? Did he have to take them off when entering an office building, a home, or a temple? In either case, what could he do but walk barefoot to his home or resieence. An emergeny call cannot be attended to trace eithr the shoes or the thief. If the fellow can walk barefoot around his residence, it may pain a little more to walk unless he can jump into a tuk tuk and have other pairs of shoes or chappals. All that he lost was perhaps a few hundred rupees; to put police to work on his cadse, many times more will have to be spent by them, depriving more urgent duty calls. Someone in the police department should caution and advise to prevent silly calls to an eergency number. Perhaps police can offer a pair of shoes to help out, and keep the file open for investigation when time permits.

Value of an item lost is known and mutters to only the owner who lost it... We can write what we like.... But in true sense he has done the right thing.... We must appreciate the fact that he had the courage to call the police for something anyone would laugh off unless it happens to themselves.... Culprit must be caught , named and shamed so that people in any function or temples in the vicinity will identify him in future... Also this will be a deterrent to such thieves though the incidents have come down drastically....

There is a kannada saying "Aane Kaddaru kalla, Adike kaddaru Kalla" (A thief is a thief, whether he steals an elephant or an areca nut)

Good job by the youth and the police! At kankanady circle (karavali circle), there are either 1 or 2 policemen stationed. The violations happening right under their nose are: People stopping vehicle on the zebra crossing Taking U-turn when signal is green The free left signal is not useful coz buses block the lane Jaywalking when the signal is green Autos from stand near udaya kitchen not following any traffic rules while entering or leaving the stand Can i call 112?

The thief who has stolen something as simple as a footwear today will not hesitate to steal something more valuable. It's good the Police have considered his complaint.
