Mangalore: Tulunadu Tradition Revitalized through ‘Aatida Nempu’

Mangalore, Aug 1: In an attempt to revive the rich tulunadu tradition Billava Seva Samaj, Kankanady organized a programme named ‘Aatida Nempu’ (Memories of Aati festival) at Sarvamangala Sabhabavan here on Sunday July 31.

The programme commenced at 4.30 pm. It was conducted in a very customary style focusing om the variety of Tulunadu rituals and practices.


Aati Kalenja was introduced in the stage. It is a traditional dance performed usually by people of Nalke community during Aati season. Later there was a short skit on Koti Chennayya and also Siri Vesha. The members of the samaj also presented a beautiful folk dance on the occasion among other cultural shows of coast.

As many as 37 different tulunadu cuisines were prepared which included Kanile padengi, Nookadde, Kanchala ambade chatni, manjalda iretha gatti, patrodde, moode, kottige and so on. A special set of Pelakai Happala, Ole Bella, Pottu Kapi was served to the people present on the occasion.

There was also a question-answer session/contest named ‘Aatida Savaal’ in which 12 questions related Aati was asked. The winners were given cash prize.

The president of the Samaj Mohan Padil welcomed the guests and the gathering. Muddu Moodubelle of Aakashvani, Chittaranjan K, Garodi zone president and Dayanand Kukkaje, Daijiworld photo-journalist were the chief guests for the occasion who jointly inaugurated the programme in a unique traditional manner.

The Billava Samaj which organized the programme included six areas namely Kankanady, Alape, Bajal, Maroli, Jeppu and Kannur. Chief secretary Chittaranjan Bolar and the former presidents of Samaj were present on the occasion.

    Really awesome, tulunadu rituals and practices are been dissappearing day by day..but this event & above captured pics could really bring tears in those people who have forgotten their mother land, rituals and far travelled away for the city life pleasure.

    Very well done. I can see that the 37 varieties of Tulunadu delicacies are actually served to the public not displayed for photographs only.
