Anna Campaign: SAC Denies ABVP's Allegations of Students' Suspension

Mangalore, Aug 19:
Facing allegations of threatening to suspend students joining the Anna campaign on Wednesday August 17, city's St Aloysius Pre-university College clarified to Daijiworld on Friday August 19 that it had made no such threat and did not prevent students from joining the stir.

Earlier on Friday, students of the college under the banner of ABVP had alleged that the college management had threatened a group of 10-15 students with suspension for joining the anti-corruption protest in support of Anna Hazare on Wednesday August 17.

Staging a protest, they said that on the first day of demonstration on Wednesday, the students concerned were not given permission to protest by the college committee. They were reportedly not allowed to boycott classes in protest.

Speaking to Daijiworld, Vinay Horatti, district leader of ABVP alleged that the principal of the college did not allow the students to join the protest against corruption on Wednesday. Students who decided to protest on Thursday August 18 morning were also denied permission, he said, and alleged that the students' ID cards were taken from them and they were threatened with suspension. He also said that the college staff took video footage of the students to make note of them and initiate action, but the students covered their faces.

When contacted, John D’Silva, principal of St Aloysius PU College, denied the allegations and said that the college did not initiate any action against the students or threaten them with suspension. He also asserted that the college did not deny permission to PUC students to protest on Wednesday, but they were told not to continue it on Thursday.

About 300 students led by ABVP protested against the college on Friday morning. Police arrived at the spot to prevent any untoward incidents from taking place.

It is learnt that a compromise was reached later between the two parties and the college management assured the students that it would not take any action.

    Dear Harold D'Cunha,
I think you have not interpreted my views properly.I am not a fan of ABVP but what i mean to say is jus the way ABVP tries to lure us to accomplish their agenda,we should improvise and see to that they follow our way instead of theirs.I marched Along with my classmates on the same day without any influence of ABVP,but when they are on the same page,i don see anythin wrong taking their support provided you are not blind to just join their group and get into matters not related to the greater good.

well i hope that with this lokpal yeddys and reddys of India will be behind bars and not making a mockery of our nation.

    Dear Harish Mangalore,
Your statement is nothing less than contradictory & double standard. Instead of advising others to grow up, first of all you have to grow up cutting all prejudice barriers you have and give your honest opinion.

I will always support protest for good cause, right now which is corruption, which affect every Indian is absolutely right. Politics should be kept out and ABVP nothing less than politics, as their history is connected to political party. We do not require corrupt Yeddy/Redy’s party to infiltrate inside SAC or at Ram Leela Maidan in Delhi, where Anna Hazare fighting against corruption. Let the student as one body protest, carrying Indian flag.

Best in the interest of students, there should not be any flag which is directly or indirectly connected to political party. Only one flat ie Indian flag, Only one song ie Vande Mataram and only one anthem ie Indian Anthem, Jana Gana Mana.

    God bless India. Jai Hind.

Grow up people. When there is a need to protest for a good cause we shouldnt give a damn about politics. The protest must be organised and the people who do protest must see to that they are not harrassed,That is where an organisation like ABVP comes in.Yes SAC is a great institution but surely John D would have taken action if not for them.

The person saying protest after hours or during holidays, such a protest has very little impact in achieving your goal. Person saying ABVP stayed mum for yeddy,u are right they shouldnt have.

But right now dont care about ABVPs agenda rather use their support in abolishing corruption.
People saying Lokpal is not democratic or unconstitutional WAKE UP,the law right now doesn stop yeddys and reddys or help recovering any wealth offshore. So its time for a good change.

As a prudent person it is right on the part of SAC authorities to deny permission for students to participate in 2nd freedom movement led by Anna & his team of 4 members. First of all whether the organising committee of Anna has taken writen permission from the Principal of SAC? Secondly, if anything happens to the students who will take the responsiblity and also give them attendence. Thirdly by provoking students we only fill there mind & heart only hattered & nothing else !.

Dear sripathi, Mangalore. Stop giving preaching.

Do ABVP has any right to hoist their flag inside SAC PU College campus? Did they taken permission from the College management before hoisting their flag?
How if the similar situation repeats in your own premesis, do u allow it?
If the entire student union of the College decides or the District or State student union decides, then it is acceptable. Not divisive student union which has nothing to do with College.

Govt. should ban all student union which is patronised by politcal party and allow only one student union ie of the College only.

Again, the multi-headed Hindutva Ravans in the guise of student’s group (ABVP) is hijacking the running of an institution. Even Annaji's associates have stated that nobody should skip their responsibility like work, school/college, tuition, daily cooking, watering the garden etc. instead join the moment when they have free time.
The Hindutva leaders are sending their home grown goondas to reach the people as moral police through back doors because their ideology is antic and is not acceptable in this 21st century. Truly speaking, there is no future for the BJP, whoever leads it, unless it totally abandons its Hindutva creed.

The student protest was supposed to be apolitical. So why does the ABVP come out with their saffron flags and saffron agenda?

The college is quite right in warning the students as later they will have to answer for attendance shortage.

The college must also be judicious in ing students at the time of admission. They riff raff and later pay for it when they pander to right wing politics.

Why was there no whimper of protest from the ABVP when the BJP govt was looting the state of its mineral wealth?

    Very simple question:
Is it ABVP strike or Anna Hazare fight against corruption including corruption of power.

Here ABVP are using their flag and corrupting the College campus and division amongst students. The students of SAC and teachers should work for the full academic year in good atmosphere and here the external organization which has nothing to do with College students union are dividing the students.

Wise decision by the SAC PU College principal Mr. John to call police and avoided any untoward incidents in the campus.
We appreciate your bold leadership. After all these students are the body of SAC College and not of the outside force, they may try to intimidate, divide but majority students are quite smart to take right decision.

At this age students may not be knowing what they are doing is right or wrong. Every parent should take care of their child, guide them properly, keep away from these kind of political affiliated parties. They are paid people to misguide youngsters. Young generation should have political awareness but at the same they must think that is not primary agenda in their life. Youngsters have every right to protest corruption but they must understand this is not the only one way. Principal is absolutely right in taking care of students. Tomorrow any mishaps happens these are same guys with the parents they barge into college campus and do the big hungama. We have seen in the past when some mishap happens how parents are taking principal in to task. Discipline of SAC is concerned I still remember when our Accounts Teacher Mr. B.S. Raman approaching the class how we use to run inside the class. That was the level of discipline in SAC. It is sacred institution and every here 4000 students are rolling out from this institution with pride. We salute this institution and indebted in our life to this institution. Some mentally sick people protest in front of such a sacred institution. I am feeling pity for their parents who failed to bring them up in right way.

I have carefully gone through the Daijiworld report on the incidence at at SA P.U.College. I have no hesitation in stating that this institution is managed most efficiently by the principal - Mr. John D'Silva his prime focus being to bring the best out of the students who have been entrusted to his care. It is by no means easy to manage this institution with a student strength of 4,000 students and when discipline has to be imposed this is misunderstood and misinterpreted. I am proud to be a past student of SAC. In early nineteen thirties I too joined the quit India movement and my mentor Father Ignatius Fernandes sent for me and asked me a simple question. What would I like to be. He answered the question himself and told me that if I wish to be a responsible citizen my first priority should be to study well and be a politician if I wished to be. That went deep into me and I prioritized education and I am glad I took that decision. Presently John D'Silva is following the motto prescribed by the Jesuits of sacred memory viz 'BRING THE BEST OUT OF STUDENTS AND MAKE THEM RESPONSIBLE CITIZENS OF THE COUNTRY.

With regard to the present scenario the authorities wish to ensure that the students do not lose attendance which would debar them from appearing for the examination. If there is a legitimate reason for group gathering this can be arranged by the people concerned on a holiday.

SAC is a reputed institution and some jealous groups are trying to spoil its good name. I studied in SAC from 1973 to 1978 and it is a fantastic institution. SAC is meant for studies and if the students want to participate in rallies/demonstrations organized by some corrupt political parties, then they should leave SAC and join some other institutions. There are several institutions in Mangalore where these students may get good education!

The principal of SAC is right in his actions. Moreover, I personally know the Principal of SAC,who is a man of principles and has been doing a very good job. Educational institutions are meant for 'education' and not for playing dirty politics. ABVP should know this and should not create problem for SAC, just because BJP is ruling in our state. Our CM also studied in a Catholic institution (St. Philomena's Puttur)and he knows that the Catholic schools impart very good education. Therefore, he should advise ABVP not to disturb peace and create controversies. LONG LIVE SAC.

How come these students did not protest against the rampant corruption in our state under the BJP ?? These teenagers will follow the footsteps of Yeddiyurapajji and the Reddys ... very apparent politics is getting into the University's .. as in Kerala .. very ominous trend ...

This looks like a political agenda rather then the Anna episode, why should ABVP, distribute their flags and force students to join, their march, this agitation is against corruption, and not a election preparation as ABVP has put it, ABVP, members were forcing the students to march with their flags, this is a very cheap propoganda, OH, before anyone comments I and my friends were approached so its an eyewitness report, it looks like this ABVP is only running after SAC on every occasion is there any enemity to this is anybodys guess
