Mangalore, Aug 19: Facing allegations of threatening to suspend students joining the Anna campaign on Wednesday August 17, city's St Aloysius Pre-university College clarified to Daijiworld on Friday August 19 that it had made no such threat and did not prevent students from joining the stir.
Earlier on Friday, students of the college under the banner of ABVP had alleged that the college management had threatened a group of 10-15 students with suspension for joining the anti-corruption protest in support of Anna Hazare on Wednesday August 17.
Staging a protest, they said that on the first day of demonstration on Wednesday, the students concerned were not given permission to protest by the college committee. They were reportedly not allowed to boycott classes in protest.
Speaking to Daijiworld, Vinay Horatti, district leader of ABVP alleged that the principal of the college did not allow the students to join the protest against corruption on Wednesday. Students who decided to protest on Thursday August 18 morning were also denied permission, he said, and alleged that the students' ID cards were taken from them and they were threatened with suspension. He also said that the college staff took video footage of the students to make note of them and initiate action, but the students covered their faces.
When contacted, John D’Silva, principal of St Aloysius PU College, denied the allegations and said that the college did not initiate any action against the students or threaten them with suspension. He also asserted that the college did not deny permission to PUC students to protest on Wednesday, but they were told not to continue it on Thursday.
About 300 students led by ABVP protested against the college on Friday morning. Police arrived at the spot to prevent any untoward incidents from taking place.
It is learnt that a compromise was reached later between the two parties and the college management assured the students that it would not take any action.
