New Delhi, Aug 30: A new sports Bill that aims to bring the Board of Control for Cricket (BCCI) under the control of the government has been opposed by the BCCI. The Bill seeks to bring the board under the provisions of RTI to provide information related to its revenue and expenditure.
The board's vice president Rajeev Shukla said that the BCCI is will not allow itself to be brought under the RTI. Top government sources say it is an attempt to control cricket in India.
The Bill would reserve about 25% of the seats in the sports bodies for former sportspersons making it possible for the former players to have a say in the affairs of the board.
The random doping tests, which were so far resisted by the players would be made mandatory if the Bill is accepted. Also cricketing bodies will have to submit details of their expenditure and earnings if the Bill becomes a law.
But it is the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) officials who could be affected the most by the Bill - VK Malhotra and Jagdish Tytler who have already served multiple terms as heads of sporting federations for more than a decade. The provisions of the bill like age limit and tenure have drawn strong opposition from the sports federations including the Indian Olympic Association.
The Bill was prepared after receiving comments and suggestions from various stakeholders and the public. The Bill seeks to function as a public authority and comply with the requirements specified in the Right to Information Act.
