Mangalore, Aug 31: Copious rains on Tuesday resulted in swelling of water level in rivers, while gale ensured that fishermen did not take to sea. For the first time during this season, the Kumaradhara Bridge near Subrahmanya was inundated, due to heavy rains which lashed malnad region. This development has occurred at a time when the temple town expects to receive heavy crowds because of intervening government holidays.

As the sea remained choppy due to strong wind, fishing boats remained moored at the seashore. Some boats were damaged because of the friction between the boats anchored together. The cyclone this time has cast its influence more on Goa and Karnataka coasts, and less on Kerala coast. Gopal Kundar, president of Deep Sea Fishermen’s Association, told Vijay Karnataka that the fishermen are not even been able to leave their boats and go home because of the necessity to oversee safety of the boats that are moored at far off ports, and also to be able to venture into the sea once the gale subsides.

The roof of a marriage hall located in Lord Pattabhiramachandra Temple in Koteshwar near Kundapur was blown away because of strong winds. The roof got deposited on the roof of a neighbouring house. A number of huge trees and electric poles fell to the ground. Power and telephone connections got snapped in many places.
