Udupi: Sea Erosion Gives Sleepless Nights to Villagers

Udupi, Sep 3: Sea erosion has been experienced in Padukare near Udyavar due to heavy rain that has been lashing the region since the last couple of days. Sea waves have been hitting the road, and giving rise to concerns that the road will suffer damages. An electric pole that was facing threat from the waves was shifted. On Friday, tahsildar, V Prasanna, and Mescom executive engineer, Gururaj Suvarna, visited the spot.

Sea erosion has also become severe at Kundapur Kody and Maravante in the district. The survival of the fisheries road between Kundapur and Kody is in jeopardy. The boulders stacked on the shore to thwart surging waves are being washed into the depths of the sea. Kundapur assistant commissioner, Sadashiva Prabhu, municipal president, K Mohandas Shenoy, PWD engineer, Chandrashekhar, and officials and engineers of revenue department and local municipality, visited the spot and guided emergency operations.

At Maravante, sea has encroached upon about 200 metres of land, and the fisheries road laid with NABARD assistance, has been partially damaged. The pipe of the drainage laid underneath the road, two sheds erected for the fishermen to take rest, and two coconut trees, have been washed away.

Byndoor MLA, K Lakshminarayan, visited the spot, and contacted district deputy commissioner with a request to undertake emergency operations. It is learnt that the deputy commissioner has released Rs 20 lac as emergency fund to manage the situation out of natural calamity fund.

After a huge holy fig tree located in front of Lord Siddhivinayaka Temple at Uppoor in the district got uprooted, the hall of the temple and post office of Uppoor Tenkabettu suffered damages. As the tree fell during the night, it did not pose danger to human lives.
