Bangalore, Sep 5: On a day of dramatic or rather perturbing political developments for the ruling BJP in Karnataka, when the politically powerful Bellary mining lord and former minister Gali Janardhana Reddy was arrested by the CBI early in the morning and taken to Hyderabad and was remanded to judicial custody for 14 days by the CBI Special Court, former state chief minister B S Yeddyurappa was unable to get any respite from the State High Court on an alleged corruption case against him.

The Karnataka High Court, which heard the anticipatory bail petition filed by Yeddyurappa in the private complaint filed by JD(S) leader Y S V Datta in respect of the award of contracts for the Upper Krishna Irrigation Project, adjourned the hearing till September 9.

The case pertains to a private complaint filed by State JD(S) General Secretary and Spokesman Y S V Datta in respect of alleged kickbacks received by two firms owned by Yeddyurappa’s two sons – Lok Sabha member B Y Raghavendra and B Y Vijayendra and son-in-law Sohan Kumar – to the tune of Rs 13 crore from a company for the award of a civil contract for the second stage of Upper Bhadra Irrigation Project during his tenure as Chief Minister.

Datta had alleged that the company owned by R N Shetty’s Jyothi Ltd had been awarded the contract despite being the higher bidder for the work and was favoured contrary to tender norms which said it should be given to the lowest bidder.

The Lokayukta police has filed an FIR against Yeddyurappa under the Prevention of Corruption Act on charges of alleged favouritism.
