Sullia, Jan 20: A two-year-old baby elephant found itself separated from a herd of wild elephants that had entered farm lands at Mandekolu. The wild elephant herd is known to frequently visit the farm lands in Mandekolu, causing occasional disturbances.
On Thursday night, after the herd entered the Kanyana area and caused damage to crops, they left the region, inadvertently leaving behind the baby elephant in the farmland of Rajashekhara Bhat. Forest officials promptly responded to the situation, securing the baby elephant with a rope and bringing it to their control camp.
The baby elephant is currently under the watchful care of veterinary doctors Dr Yashaswi Sullia and Dr Nitin Prabhu. Despite being tied, the young elephant continues to move around the area. Forest officials are actively working to locate the herd so that the baby elephant can be reunited with its family.
The rescue operation is a collaborative effort, with Sullia assistant conservator of forests (ACF) Praveen Shetty and Sullia zonal forest officer Manjunath playing crucial roles. This incident follows a previous case in April 2022, where a separated baby elephant from Ajjavara was taken to the Dubare elephant camp but unfortunately succumbed to its condition after a few days.
