Mangalore: Defective Landing - DGCA Recommends Action Against Pilot

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, Sep 21: Relating to an incident in which the pilot of an Air India Express flight committed mistake in landing his aircraft at Bajpe airport on June 25 this year, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has instructed the concerned to take action against the pilot.

The flight had touched down farther than the prescribed area. Realizing his mistake and the dangers it posed, the pilot applied brakes, because of which a catastrophe was averted. Although no loss of lives or property had take place in this incident, the DGCA had conducted inquiry into the incident as per rules. It has come to the conclusion that the pilot was at fault.

Even though touching down of the aircraft beyond the permitted zone happens often at various airports, such mistakes can give rise to grave accidents, one of which had happened at the airport here last year. As per landing rules, the pilots who overshot the touch down point have to abort the landing procedure, go around the airport and approach the runway again.

    well said Mr Ibrahim Ambikana!!!!
thanks a lot for understanding from the staffs point of view. even i had been a staff in one of the airlines too!
first of all, ground staffs are trying at its best to be better than before! when it comes about making decisions abt the excess they are strictly briefed abt waiving off excess, as it affects the payload, where they do not want to take any chance on movement of flight!
there is no one to appreciate the staffs when they do good, but when its the other way opposite, ah no comments!!!
about the crews, even they are having the toughest life... when the annoncements are being done, in the midway the passengers neglect about knowing whats going on... gets up to stand first in the queue or runs to the washroom!! there were some cases were passengers became physically violent on the crew! any thing to say on this???
pilot- they are the ones who wants us to reach to our destiny safely!! why will they ever want to play with our life!
people please be humble enough to think about all this!!!
i understand from all viewers point of view too!!!
let us all pray that we should not face this kind of situation and be the best to one anothe!

Mangaloreans were happy when direct flights were started from Gulf. But todays date apart from safety issues, look at the airport administration like customs. They harass people like it was happening at mumbai airport 15 years back . They shamelessly demand and collect money from passengers. For Passenger who goes for discussion ,they make them to wait till their business is over and make drama of cutting official receipt.(This way out of 25 LCD's which are generally brought from Gulf Flights , they make official receipt for two)

First of all Air India is running under loss. Secondly the counter staff and others at airport are very stubborn and act with passengers as they are doing some favor to us. Being only flight directly connect us from Dammam I use to fly from quite some time. Month of June, they harrassed me for my excess luggage eventhoug I had only 27Kg from Mangalore to Bahrain as you have to carry 7kg in hand not in luggage.Afterwards I decided I will never ever travel in any Air India Flights in any case. Now I am using Jet Airways or Emirate Airlines who knows how to handle their staff.

Dear Elita D,souza, well said. you are  correct as passenger we do not have direct flight to Mangalore and they are depending on Air India Express. That is why every one has to pay high fare and the rubbish service.Any new airline start direct service to Mangalore than this Express will fly empty with Capt and Hostess. Once i was flying on this route and the Ear Phone distributed for some US$: has to be collected back bec. of the defective system. CAN U BELIEVE THIS.

The Attitude of the airport handling staff at Mangalore, not allow more than 20Kg. If u argue and ask for duty manager he is busy. why he should resign and stay at home when passenger problems cannot sorted.with all this problems why all Manglorean raise their voice to give permission to other airlines to allow direct flight.

Spot on Mr. Ibrahim Ambikana, Dubai - On the Gulf sector passenger behavior is at its worst. Either Alcohol should not be served at all, or if served - they should charge heavily for it. Cabin Crew on Gulf Flights are mostly trainees or new recruits (Baptism by Fire as we say !!) so finding fault with them and behaving in a boisterous manner will only endanger the other passengers and make their flight uncomfortable. Having said that - the issue here is Human error and poor infrastructure at the airports - that needs to be taken care off,

When we know the mlore runway is dangerous, why is there no action to prevent any mishaps. Few suggestions are:
    1. The sand pit at the end of the run which is put up to slow down the aircraft if it overshoots the run way is not maintained. The sand has hardened and grass grows on it now. What this means is the aircraft will not slow down if it were to go on it. Maintain the sand pit regularly. Also use really fine sand or look for alternates.
    2. Engineering technology has advanced. There are ways to stop the aircraft from jumping off the cliff by using strong steel ropes that will lock the aircraft wheels. Have you seen how fighter jets are stopped on those small landing strips on warships. Build something in similar lines.
    3. Look at the airport runway from google maps. There is more than 200 meters of land available (towards the north end) within the existing compound to extend the runway. If extended it will cut across the old runway.
    4. Have a fire station at the bottom of the cliff. Install modern water pumps at the bottom of the cliff. There is noting wrong is being prepared for the worst. In the 2009 mishap, most lost life from burns. It took more than 45 min for fire truck to reach the spot.

All the above points seems so basic. But we are an country with no value for human life.

I would hope Daijiworld to take up the above points with the Mlore airport chairman.

O'God, one more piolet error, almost another accident on June 25th. Was anything learnt from the previous accident? This table top runway has significant limitations. The pilot must be dismissed, better yet, his license must be revoked, one can not allow this type of error to continue while landing. If the piolet crosses the landing space, he must take off and turn around and reapproach. This type of piolet error will certainly close down the airport. The other singificant issue is the Air India Express airline condition. The airline is being removed from the star alliance for maintenance related issues it is time Indian authorities take effective action against Air-India Express and all Air India flights to assure air worthiness. India can not afford to have airline accidents of any kind. Thanks

MR. IBRAHIM AMBIKANA: What you have written is a reality of life.
We are naturally prone to criticise
the cabin crew of an airline, but
if the passengers are behaving in a wild and disorderly manner, then the crew will get confused and
dioriented. It may be a good idea, not to serve liquor to the passengers in flights less than
four hours. I flew in 1999 from
Dubai to Trivandrum in Air Malawi
even today, I am not sure whether I was
in an open market or inside an
aircraft. Calling bell was ringing all the way, drunk passengers were arguing about their personal problems, it was
totally a madhouse. If the passengers are shifting to the front or back, it can make the landing complicated.

Now all the modern runways are
    equipped with electronic guiding
    systems. Some of the Indian
runways may not have it, so the
pilots must be totally guided by
    the guiding system inside the
    aircraft, and make some serious
mistakes and landing in the wrong
    location at the runway.

Runway should be built to tackle such pilot erros. There may be some scenarios where pilot would overshoot the landing point (due to whatever reason it might be). You cannot expect them to be very perfect. Have double headroom on the runway to avoid incidents. If the airport is not fit to extend the runway then be prepared to take such risks. As far my analysis goes the mangalore airport is only suitable for for small domestic flights.

It is easy to blame pilots / crews whenever we get a chance. Offcourse there are many shortcomings from their part. I was a passenger on AI Express on 6th July this year. Aircraft was full with lots of families. It was a night flight reaching at 9.30PM. When aircraft was making effort for landing many passengers started going to toilets. Air hostess had tough time controlling them. Once flight touched down in a bad weather situation, everybody got up and frantically opening over head luggage bins, making cell phone calls to their near and dear. Mind you flight was still taxing in a good speed. All announcement from air hostess going vain and nobody wanted to listen anything other than hurrying or trying to go to aircraft door. A few even wanted to go to toilet this time. Lost all patience Air hostess switched off lights to prevent people getting up but my fellow dear countrymen put on reading lights! Most passengers are our 'elite' class with 'NRI' families. I know they are all well paid white collar NRIs here in Dubai. But what a shame ! I even asked one guy ' are we not going to one place ? then why the hurry ? Later I observed the same passengers who thrown tantrums are waiting at the luggage belt with me. Who will educate the educated ? I have done a few international travel with non indian sector but these things are alien to them.

This is a sequel to the disaster we had at Bajpe Airport where several people lost their lives. No doubt the authorities are taking action in the matter.

Regarding aborting landing..... here again the pilots are pulled up for this action not for aborting the decision to land and circle around and try to land again but for overshooting.

In the circumstances, it is expedient that the concerned pilots should not be questioned for giving up landing. Then only they will take sufficient care to take the right decision in case of an error in judgement.

It is good that at least now the mistake is identified and the steps to discipline the pilots have been taken.BUT!!I do not think any B-737 or A 320s have a fully automatic landing system or the pilots at all the time can be 100% perfect to hit the spot or the fear of overshoot. Why dont we cut the likelihood of this risk by extending the runway?? the plan which is still not realised. What if there is a sudden surprise cross wind or a windshear microburst while landing which needs more glide to compansate and to perform a smooth landing? than also will the blame be on pilots? or the passengers be sitting ducks? when will the safe runway extension or spill out limit be covered??? until this is done we cannot see any thing called safe landing . or we cannot hope any big aircrafts taking to the skies from manglore.we can only hope!!

Air India Express employs pilots in Command not of Indian origin. Now fake pilot license or not, the question we have to ask is, when will we have a choice to fly other than AIE? Or we are having a choice to fly indirect flights. So far, I have found only Jet Airways to be very professional and with near clean history and KF also is a great airline to fly with.

Believe me most of these pilots obtained their pilot license through false certifications. Every pilot should be interviewed every year to validate their license. I remember some time back there were a series of scams in obtaining these false licenses. One of the pilot caught red-handed while landing using the front wheel rather than the rear wheels which was noticed after a minor incident, later they found out that the pilot was having a forged license. We Mangaloreans suffer due to these issues and never ever approved any other airlines to operate to Gulf countries eversince the last accident.
