Mumbai, Aug 25: Veteran filmmaker Rakesh Roshan recently opened up about the painstaking process behind crafting the iconic look of Krrish, revealing it took nearly six months to perfect the superhero mask for his son, Hrithik Roshan. Speaking during a visit by Farah Khan to his Khandala home — captured for her vlog — Roshan shared fascinating details about the costume, the challenges of filming, and the evolution of the beloved superhero franchise.
Roshan explained that the signature black mask was sculpted from wax to achieve the right fit and look on Hrithik. However, this creative choice came with a unique challenge — the wax would begin to melt after just a few hours under studio lights. As a result, Hrithik had to frequently switch masks during shooting. To preserve the masks and provide relief during long hours on set, a fully air-conditioned bus was kept running 24/7.

“The design process alone took half a year. We were constantly trying different versions of the mask and costume to see what suited Hrithik best,” said Roshan. He also recalled the heaviness of the final black outfit worn by the actor, adding to the physical demands of playing a superhero.
Krrish, which released in 2006, is the second film in the franchise following Koi... Mil Gaya, and stars Hrithik Roshan in a dual role, alongside Priyanka Chopra, Naseeruddin Shah, and Rekha. The story follows Krishna Mehra, a young man with superhuman abilities, who transforms into the masked hero Krrish to stop the evil scientist Dr. Arya from unleashing a dangerous supercomputer.
The franchise expanded further with Krrish 3 in 2013, and in April 2025, Rakesh Roshan officially announced Krrish 4, marking Hrithik Roshan’s directorial debut. This latest chapter, being produced by Yash Raj Films in collaboration with Rakesh Roshan, will see Hrithik juggling both directing and reprising his role as the superhero. Production is scheduled to begin early next year.
