Mangalore, Sep 24: The city is known to be by far one of the fastest developing cities in the state, if not the country. However, the condition of the roads in some of the important parts of the city here tells a different story altogether.

The Mangalore City Corporation came into existence in the year 1983 and has completed 28 years of service. But it is sad to note that the basic facilities like good roads in the city are being neglected.

The MCC has achieved a landmark in collecting 99.99 % tax from the citizens and also bagged an award for the achievement. Rs 200 crore special grants were allotted by the government mainly for the road work. However, in city, areas like Mallikkatta and Jyothi to Bunts Hostel road, the asphalt has been washed away in the rain.

In areas like Bendore, where many educational institutions are placed, bad roads have been creating horrendous problems for school kids and college students. Traffic jams have become a daily nuisance during peak hours, all thanks to the bad roads. Traffic cops in fact are the worst hit. Every time there is a road block due to traffic, these men in uniform are made to work in these areas fighting against the dust and pouring rain.

As Pumpwell is a low-lying area, roads from Pumpwell to Nanthoor are in a pathetic condition. Two wheelers are finding it difficult to commute on these roads.

The condition of roads at the service bus stand road, Bunder Road, Market road is no better. Travelling on the road connecting the service bus stop to Lady Goshen is a nightmare. There is no asphalting at all.

Even those roads that are concreted are incomplete - at the end or beginning of all concreted roads a small portion is left undone, without even ordinary repair, which not only spoils the overall beauty of the road but gives a hell of a time to commuters. It is amazing that there are even roads with smooth concrete on only one side while the other side is full of craters!

Muneer Katipalla, president of district unit of DYFI, the organisation has time and again raised its voice against injustice or problems in the society, says that the main roads were repaired with the help of CM’s fund and most of them were concreted. But as less commission rate is fixed for inner roads, no contractor wants to take up the work. When the organisation held a protest during October last year, the participation of public was poor which showed the laid-back approach of people. Only activists of unions hold demonstrations which later go in vein, he regrets.

Corporator Gretta Rebello says that the quality of the asphalt supplied these days is poor, making the road unfit for commuting in a short span of time. Many corporators of different wards have complained about this issue at a meeting called by the commissioner, she said.

Interlocking of roads in second cross of Ring Road has been taken up and tenders for asphalting of roads will be called after the rainy season stops, she added.

Corporator Naveen D'Souza said that in Bendorewell road there was a leakage in a water pipe which has weakened the road, as every time water gets blocked and the road gets damaged. He assured that after rains, a permanent solution would be sought out. He also stated it was discouraging to see the public and media blame corporators for the poor condition of the roads without knowning the actual reason.

Hanumanth Kamath, a social worker and president of Nagarika Hitharakshana Samithi also points out the problem of public response to the issue. People fail to turn up for demonstrations in large numbers, which defeats the purpose of the protests and has no effect on the administration. He stated that State Bank – Nellikai road and Pandeshwar to Kudroli temple bridge road were damaged within 15 days of their repair. When work is taken up, they give three-year guarantee, but it wears off in a few months. The quality of work is not scrutinised properly by the engineers during repair work, he complained.

As the city is on a hilly area and roads are uneven, it demands top quality asphalt for longevity. There are also complaints that 90 % of the corporators take commission before they assign work to contractors. People should raise voice against all these discrepancies, Kamath urged.

It remains to be seen how long the people of Mangalore will tolerate the situation. Mangaloreans are known for their patience, which unfortunately has let the administration take things lightly. The need of the hour is a concerted effort from the public to raise its voice, for, it is the common man who has to suffer in the end.

The coastal town of Mangalore has been getting 100 inches rain from time immemorial. The excuse by corporators that rain plays havoc on roads is not tenable. I agree with R. Mallar that either there is lack if technical skill to make roads that withstand rain or there is no will. The contractors who are awarded contracts must give guarantee for 10 years.

Indeed the infrastructure in Mangalore is pathetic. Even the planning is not good. Roads at least should have been made extra wide with safe footpaths considering from a 25 year ahead scenario. As the vehicle density is increasing fast, it is just a matter of time that our Kudla will be like Bangalore or Mumbai. The town planners should have learnt a lesson or two from the well designed satellite cities of Vashi and Navi Mumbai. I fully agree with Rubin (Dubai) when he says the stastrospheric prices for land and flats are totally unjustified considering horrible infrastructure, perineal electricity problems, no good sewerage system, hot and humid climate, and added to that the communal sensitivity, no job oppurtunities, no mass transit system!! All in all, it is an excellent place only for the purposes of education, medical tourism, and tourism.

Arman, Managalore MG Road is good to some extent, but where are the proper foothpath's over there. Especially if you go near ballbagh and towards PVS you can hardly find foothpath. Also who told you that there is proper drainage system in MG Road Mangalore. Especially during rainy season MG Road is the one which gets more flooded with water. Did you notice that? Now you please dont come back with your comment blaming BJP ok.

This time when I was in mlore on vacation (during August) I found more confortable to ride than any of the previous years as there were concrete roads in many parts of the city. Fact is a fact. I am seeing these photos, it looks like all photos are of same road in different angles. It would heve been better presented if photos of different roads with bad state were published. Other day I saw news about interlocking tiles in mangalore. There also I saw many photos of the single place!!! Not convincng isnt it. Any how I appreciate the social concern and bad roads have to be highlighted.

It still haunts me. How can one lay stones for foot path in such a uneven way at KSR road? I can't imagine the lethargy of the public who bear the brunt but don't protest. That work was done during early 80's and still continues.

The officials who are responsible for the foot path should be taken to foreign countries to convince the class of public works.

Same is the condition on the newly built fly overs. Why can't the officials ensure that the alignment is done perfectly at least on the fly overs!!!!

Really we need a serious protest to hold the contractors/officials responsible in construction activity.

Hope Anna Hazareji will take this cause in his next round of protests which is the need of the hour.

Common friends, forget party and religious lines and unite to build a system to ensure that quality of construction is of high standards by holding the concerned responsible thereby saving a large number of lives.

As a civil engineer with over 24 years of experience I can say with conviction that the PWD/ corporation engineers and obviously contractors simply don't know how to build a road! Preparation of subgrade, subsurface drainage, and finally the asphalt - all of these play important role in making a good road.

It is interesting to note that, in my remote village in Kasaragod, when a newly laid road was washed away by first rain (by the way under congress rule), villagers ensured that the contractors were not paid until the contractor relaid the entire stretch. And it lasted for more than 10 years!

If you go to see condition of the roads in developing city like Mangalore gives us a disgusting feelings.People from different quarters expressed their grievances of their own areas.Overall survey gives us a bad taste in almost all parts of Mangalore regardless of the area.Accusing/blaming each other, showing fingers at whoever in the power is of no point/return.Becasue all are of same calibre.I am not belonging to any party and I am always in support of developments.Whether it is BJP Or Congress or any other party, moment they assume office/chair their mind start working backwards.Only peoples strength/voice can teach them the lesson.Nobody is bothered/concerned about poor/middle class people's inconvinience. As some of the commentators rightly said wherever the high rise buildings are coming up all the required infrastructures leading to that building/colony is being built for the convinience of the colony/building's residents neglecting other parts of the city. Then they will boast/make a tall story about modernization.I request all the departments/people responsible/ministry involved/authorities concerned to make over all efforts to modernize the city without compromising the convinience of middle/poor class. Then only we can talk about our development activities.JAI Ho MCC/Departments,authorities,Engineers,builders.Keep it i mind that there are poor people also living on this beatiful planet with their meagre needs.Main thing is roof on the head-everybody's wish.Don't rob

@Jamal, Mangalore/Abudhabi it's the nature of congress party and congress supporters when something happens good trying to take the credit of that even though is not involved in that, but when something goes wrong it's the nature of congress to put it on other political parties.

MCC is collecting the tax 6 months in advance why? If we don't pay 6months in advance then we have to pay penalty again why??? This is the contribution of new ruling party please note i don't support any party ultimately all are sailing on a same boat. I think nowhere in the world you need to pay tax 6 months in advance and they charge you penalty if you don't pay before 6 months, absolutely day light looters of public money. In fact there should be a grace period of one month. Poor citizens afraid of penalty and obey the unethical rule of MCC. I think all elected corporators are sleeping. Nowadays Corporators are making money through the contractors by awarding them road constructions, drainage etc. We need to raise our voice against this.

Having visited Mangalore recently, we must confess that there is a tremendous progress in the roadways in many areas of Mangalore. Potholes in many areas have disappeared and good concrete roads are in existence. With ever increasing traffic added with the current monsoon season, work in many areas may have slowed down but swift action is needed for the safety and comfort of people.

Lets make no mistake that progress in roadways is in evidence in many areas of Mangalore. Hopefully now that the monsoon season is coming to an end, the authorities will focus their attention to better quality roads as this will not only improve the image of Mangalore but also help the people of Mangalore enjoy safety and comfort in their daily life of struggles.
