Mangalore, Sep 25:
Mangalore is in dire need of a good stadium as many play cricket with enthusiasm, but due to lack of space no such projects have been initiated, he observed, adding that a stadium could be built if two acres of land is provided close to the city, said former Indian ace paceman from Karnataka Javagal Srinath.

'Mysore Express' Srinath was in the city on Sunday September 25 to take part in the marathon organised by KMC Hospital to mark ‘World Heart Day’.

Speaking to reporters later at the Dakshina Kannada Cricket Association building, he said that in Mysore and Hubli work on the construction of stadia has been taken up already, while in Shimoga it is yet to start. This would also facilitate practicing cricket on turf, he said.

He was of the opinion that any age between 15 and 22 may be ripe for a cricketer to make his mark in the game, provided he is interested and has an honest approach. These days youngsters with calibre take up the game, but just one failure is enough to make them give it up which should not be happening, he said.

"Sustaining interest in cricket throughout one's career is important, and to become a pace bowler one should start bowling at an early age and bowl at least 800 to 900 overs in a year," he advised.

Srinath further said that KPL matches will start in February and auctions will be in the month of December. About Sachin Tendulkar's suggestions to implement changes in the one day format of the game (that a match should be divided into four innings of 25 overs sides batting alternatively), Srinath said 'it’s a good idea'.

About UDRS issue, Srinath, who is now a match referee, said that ICC is in the process of solving the issue. As a referee his reponsibilities have increased, he added.

He sought the cooperation of people's representatives of this region to support the game of cricket in tune with other districts that are taking noteworthy steps.

Dr Srikanth Rai, president, DKCA, Arun Kumar Shetty, secretary, DKCA, treasurer Venugopal Kaikamba among others welcomed him.

At first let me congratulate the people who have taken the initative to do the ground work to make a good cricket ground for our young lads in MLE. Also it is a pleasure to see a veteran cricketer like Anil Kumble who is giving equal support for this cause. I hope that this struggle will continue till a stadium is done. Wishing one and all a great success.

"angayyage benne itkondu tuppaka hudukadidaranta". We have a big and ideally located ground at Panambur. It is in outskirts near to NH. It can be developed to international standards with proper pavillion, parking facilities etc. I have pointed this out many times whenever news about a cricket stadium came up. If this stadium is developed it is ideal to play cricket with sea breeze coming from one side.

I agree with the comments that Mangalore needs much more basic facilities like good roads, drainage, garbage collection and hygene, electricity etc which are the symptoms of a civilized city. Cricket stadium is not the most important need we have.

Wow Srinath thanks for taking up this issue. Surprised to see none of the commentaros here never questioned what BCCI is doing with its earnings!! especially development of cricket in India!! for 2010-11 FY, officially BCCI earned Rs.1666.84 crores. (unofficially 100times more than d earnings) How much of that income is dedicated to cricket's development in India like constructing stadiums in smaller cities like Mangalore, Isn't it their responsibility? Shame on BCCI who is minting money through blood and sweat of our cricketers but showing a blind eye to the development of game from the grassroot level. Indians should be happy to know that KCA has now many ex cricketrs as its administrators like Srinath and Anil Kumble who will definitely dedicate their time and energy to the development of game and get rid of corrupt politicians who still control BCCI for personal gains. Thank you Srinath for taking up this issue. We hope you, Kumble and all ex cricketers will change KCA functionality and look forward to take over the control of BCCI in near future and get rid of all corrupt politicians from BCCI and open up governing of BCCI to ex cricketers.

Good to see so many known faces in the pictures. I once again reiterate that nothing will happen in Mangalore for sports. The Nehru maidan in the last 20 odd years has gone from bad to worse being not suitable for cricket. Cricket means turf. Without turf NO cricketer from Mangalore can make it big because all 1st class cricket and high level competitions are on turf, and without practicing and playing on turf any cricketer can not make it big. Even look at the state of Mangala stadium, again bad to worse with no proper international facilities for our athletes. How can one represent the state and country inspite of being talented. Srinath is right in saying land is needed for building the stadium. Why doesn't KSCA along with BCCI sponsor a international stadium in Mangalore. As it is BCCI is one of the richest cricket bodies in the world, but the beaurecrats want to keep a big share of money for themselves as do the politicians. Nothing is gonna happen I tell you. Anyways good to see my old friend Srinath visit my homeland Mangalore. Good to see so many old friends like Dr.Anand from KMC, Marla, Sudhakar anna. Vishwa and others in the pictures. Hope to see a cricket stadium in Mangalore in my lifetime. Good luck...

Why so much craze about cricket alone???? Other games are in a destitute status! Extremely sad indeed.

From commercial point of view, yes, a good international standard stadium is required for Mangalore, preferably by private partnership to preserve quality.

DK's political reps are sleeping it seems or may be too busy in expanding their real estate business.

We should have a wider and broader perspective considering future of twin districts. It is shameful that we do not have a classic stadium even today!! Congratulations Mangaloreans!!!

The Dire need is Government collges of engineering and medical for people who cannot afford private colleges.Who play cricket for a living?.The game has a fame and name only because of the MNC's who endorse models and actors to promote the commercial products and thus promote cricket. There is no MNC's to promore education for poor. These people around the cricketer are wasting time.

    1.Very small pavillion
    2.No Gallery stands
    3.No Parking facilities
    4.No hotels,restaurants
If sports minister shows interest,he can bring this ground to International level.

A humble request to the Govt of Karnatak and Cricket association, to draft a plan for National & internation level cricket stadium in between M'lore and udupi district.

There has many talented cricketers, where there is lack of space for growth and progress. from the past 25 years there is no progress happening in these 2 districts and lack of interest shown from the state govt side to prosper....except a double highway plan been implemented currently.

some plans thought of were hopeless and were against the environment ethics...the flyover at kottara chowki was hanging from 5-6 years

After Bangalore, Mangalore is a potential location for business setup for software gaints and for tourism.....the cricket stadium project will bring not only employment to local people also give a opportunity for local boys to increase their chances in the under 19 and senior level national cricket team

The concept for a need of a cricket stadium should be considered in the context of a "big picture" project. A stadium should not be confined only to an area of two acres, but should be addressed in a large thinking of more than twenty acres. A stadium requires a good size pavilion, a good size parking facility, and also a clear access for all traffic entry and exit. A good quality stadium can bring lots of income from many other sports and recreational activity for many other all-year-long programs. A good quality Stadium also requires good landscaping and recreational outlook by preserving all the surrounding greenery. A good stadium also requires good restaurants, a good "Hall of Fame" facility, and many other long range plans and programs. A Stadium is like an airport that will always remain tall and broad.

A well planned cricket stadium will also attract many other regional or zonal cricket and other sports events that will bring so many other commercial and touristic benefits.

A good size cricket stadium is ideal in places for beyond Beeri, Kotekar where you have many other Universities, Medical Colleges and Infosys campus. This is how a good quality cricket stadium should be focused for the betterment of not only Mangalore but for South Kanara as a whole.

A well planned Stadium should be developed thru public investments so that many ideas and plans could be implemented thru a broad range and long range development program.

We badly need cricket stadiums in Mangalore and Udupi. Even outskirts of the city is fine. Most important is 4 lane road to the stadums to avoid traffic jams during pretigeous matches. Govt denotified lands for MRPL and FZE, why not few acres for a spacious cricket stadium? It many cost only few crores!! Lack of desire and will power??
