Bantwal, Oct 3: “Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan and Mahatma Gandhi National Employment Guarantee Projects are significant programmes of the union government and their effective implementation will realize the dream of Mahatma Gandhi for greater prosperity of India,” said union minister for civil aviation Vayalar Ravi.

Minister Vayalar Ravi was speaking at the inaugural of a special meeting of Dakshina Kannada District Congress Committee (DCC) held at B C Road, here on Sunday October 2.

On the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, he also appealed to Congress activists to stay committed to nation building.

“Education and employment for all is the chief objective of the programme. Education will empower social justice and employment by improving the economic condition.  Similar significant programmes are being implemented by the union government, but they are not effectively implemented in BJP-reigned states, added minister Ravi.  He also urged Congress activists to create general awareness.

AICC chief secretary Oscar Fernandes urged Congress activists to devise a struggle for upliftment of the poor, which is the ideology of Congress.  “The dream of Mahatma Gandhi for an economically stronger nation will only be realized in the progress of all people,” said Oscar Fernandes.

DCC president B Ramanat Rai presided over the programme.  He said that the BJP-led state administration has been projecting social welfare programmes of the union government as their own, thereby cheating the common man.
Former MP Vinay Kumar Sorake, KPCC general secretary Ivan D’Souza, Mohammed Badruddin, Moideen Bava, G H Khader, Ashwani Kumar Rai, Bondala Jagannat Shetty, Dr Raghu, Padmanabha Naringana, Vinay Kumar Shetty, A C Bhandary, Thumbe Prakash Shetty, Atlas Ali Bolantoor, Padmashear Jain, M S Mohammed, Mayilappa Salian, and Rajeev Shetty Yedtoor were present on the occasion.

Ravi invited the families of Air India Express (AIE) air crash victims to New Delhi to resolve the issue of compensation by discussions with AIE officers. The air crash victims’ committee presented their memorandum to minister Ravi on the same occasion.

Addressing media persons, Committee president Mohammed Beary said that despite the tragedy having occurred 16 months ago, the families continue to grieve. “The families are running to AIE offices, seeking compensation in vain. Mulla & Mulla Company appointed lawyer H D Nanavati is causing injustice to victim’s families,” he added.

Committee member Abbonu said that AIE officers are only offering assurances and not responding to the grievances of victims’ families.  “Although the Supreme Court advised AIE to pay Rs 75 lac to the family of each air crash victim, it has not been awarded thereby causing injustice to the victims’ families,” he added.
