SJVNL Achieves Record Power Generation

Shimla, Oct 9 (IANS): Sutlej Jal Vidyut Nigam Ltd (SJVNL) Sunday said the country's biggest hydropower plant, located in Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh, has achieved a record power generation due to abundant monsoon rains.

The 1,500 MW Nathpa Jhakri project crossed 6,000 million units of power generation from April 1 to Oct 6, said Vijay Verma, the deputy general manager of SJVNL, which operates the plant.

He said the generation this fiscal would surpass the target of 6,900 million units.

"Currently, the generation is 750 million units more than the target and is 810 million units more than what was achieved on this date last year," he added.

In 2010-11, the project generated 7,140 million units against the target production of 6,700 million units.

The SJVNL is a joint venture between the central and the Himachal governments.

Its second hydropower project - 412 MW Rampur hydroelectric project in upper Shimla - will be commissioned by early 2013.

From its maiden Nathpa Jhakri project, SJVNL is supplying electricity to nine northern states. It generates about 38 million units daily.
