Udupi, May 8: Thalassemia is a life long red blood cell disorder caused by genetic abnormality in hemoglobin. International Thalassemia day is observed to raise awareness about prevention, options of curability and care of patients with Thalassemia. The theme for 2024 is “Empowering Lives, Embracing Progress: Equitable and Accessible Thalassemia Treatment for All”
The chief guest of the event was Dr Veena Kumari, medical officer, blood bank, District Hospital, Udupi who inaugurated the clinic and in her talk informed that “Patients with Thalassemia deserve to get the best possible care and chance at cure.” She emphasised on the need for public private partnership model for diseases like Thalassemia.
Dr. Padmaraj Hegde, dean, KMC, Manipal was the guest of honour who congratulated the division for starting this comprehensive clinic. In his talk he mentioned that “Lot of philanthropic support has enabled bone marrow transplants for such children in KMC.” He also released an information booklet on Thalassemia and said “Detailed information of the disease should be given to the caregivers in the language best understood by them.
Dr Vasudeva Bhat K, prof and head, division of Paediatric Haematology and Oncology, KMC, Manipal welcomed everyone for the event. He said that “There cannot be a better day to launch the clinic than on 'International Thalassemia Day' and our vision matches with the theme.. Dr Archana M V, associate professor in the same division gave an overview of comprehensive Thalassemia clinic and its functioning. She said that, “The clinic will function on second Saturday of every month and cater to patients from Udupi and neighbouring districts."
On this occasion, Belaku Charitable Trust distributed financial assistance to a few Thalassemia patients. Dr Shiran Shetty, deputy medical superintendent delivered the vote of thanks. The formal function was followed by an awareness programme for caregivers and nurses. Dr Swathi P.M, senior resident in division of Paediatric Hematology and Oncology was the master of ceremony for the programme.
