Viral video of NWKRTC bus driver using umbrella turns out to be prank

Updated

Daijiworld Media Network – Bengaluru (MS)

Bengaluru, May 25: Transport minister Ramalinga Reddy has clarified the viral video showing a bus driver using an umbrella while driving, stating that it was a prank orchestrated by the woman conductor of the bus. He also expressed anger towards the BJP for allegedly spreading the fake video and posting comments against the government.

Providing details about the incident, Reddy said, “On May 23, the bus from the Dharwad depot was operating on the Betageri-Dharwad route. Hanumanthappa was the driver, and Anita was the conductor. At 4:30 pm, it was raining, and there were no passengers on the bus. The driver took the umbrella from the woman conductor, drove the vehicle, and asked the woman conductor to make the video for fun.

“There was no roof leakage in the bus. No complaints regarding this matter have been filed with KSRTC authorities by the driver, conductor, or passengers. The vehicle has been inspected by technicians, who confirmed that there is no roof leakage. Both the driver and the conductor have been suspended from service for their irresponsible behavior and for tarnishing the image of KSRTC,” he said in a social media post.

Daijiworld Media Network – Madikeri (MS)

Madikeri, May 25: A video has gone viral on social media showing a bus driver from the NWKRTC division driving a bus while holding an umbrella to shield himself from rain due to a leaking roof. The incident highlights the poor maintenance of public transport vehicles in the region.

For the past few days, heavy rains have lashed Madikeri and Kodagu, creating challenging conditions for bus drivers. The viral video vividly illustrates the dire state of the bus, compelling the driver to use an umbrella inside the vehicle to stay dry, underscoring the lack of proper maintenance.

Netizens have expressed their outrage over the unsafe conditions under which the driver is forced to operate, posing a potential danger to the lives of passengers and other motorists on the road. One netizen commented, "The bus driver is driving in a dangerous manner, holding an umbrella in one hand due to the leaking roof. The transport department is playing with the lives of passengers. First, get the buses maintained properly."

Unfortunately Mr. Reddy didnt bother to respond when a whole bus load of passengers including a pregnant lady and a student who missed his final exams, when the AMBARI bus we were travelling in got stranded at 2 am in nelyadi. The depot manager or the numerous other people the poor driver tried connecting with. He had to go to Mangalore wake some one up and get a airawata for us at 8 am. By the time we reached Bangalore it was 4.30 pm.

Who asked this driver to drive bus in this condition? That authorized person should be arrested and severely punished. If driver drove bus on his own will, then driver must be punished for risking passengers life. He could have reported to higher authority about the situation and cancelled the trip or made alternative arrangements.
