Mangalore, Oct 26: On the auspicious occasion of Deepavali, hundreds of widows were felicitated and given recognition at Lord Gokarnanatheshwara Temple in Kudroli here on October 26.

The ceremony was conducted for those widows who could not be present for the similar programme organized by the temple, earlier this month during Dasara on October 3.

The widows participated in 'Chandrika Homa' and joined in pulling a silver chariot around the Temple premises. They even performed 'aarti'.

Also on the occasion, Malathi, wife of Janardhana Poojary, managing trustee of the Temple and the brain behind the idea, took an oath along with other women, to continue performing rituals even after the death of their husbands. They pledged to continue wearing vermillion on their foreheads along with the ‘mangalasutra’(taali).

The main purpose of the ceremony was to bring widows, who are otherwise kept away from auspicious occasions and denied the right to wear certain things after the death of their husbands, to bring about a new message of social reformation.

Speaking to the media persons later, Janardhana Poojary requested the ban of the word ‘widow’ and replace with a word that would reflect the respect they deserve. He urged the Government both at the centre and state to respect all women irrespective of their status and shed narrow-mindedness towards widows. In his message, Poojary said, “A husband never dies. It is only his body that goes away.”

Poojary gifted the women sarees, blouse pieces, Vermilion (kum kum) and sweets (laddoos).

In the name of Dharma the communities (Jatis) inheriting Varna was to bind certain communities to sources of influence, power and economy while locking out others and thus create more affluence for Jatis in higher classes and severe poverty for Jatis in lower classes and the outcaste Dalit.
Similarly in North, ostracized by society, thousands of India's widows flock to the holy city of Vrindavan waiting to die. They are found on side streets, hunched over with walking canes, their heads shaved and their pain etched by hundreds of deep wrinkles in their faces. These Hindu widows, the poorest of the poor, are shunned from society when their husbands die, not for religious reasons, but because of tradition and because they're seen as a financial drain on their families. They cannot remarry. They must not wear jewelry. They are forced to shave their heads and typically wear white. Even their shadows are considered bad luck.
Manu's Dharma Sutra, which is considered authoritative in this regard, relates all rights to duties specified by caste, age, and sex. Traditional rights then are privileges of status and position. However, for twenty-five hundred years there have been rebellions within the Hindu tradition against its hierarchical order, and today many Hindus believe Manu's code needs revision.

This is a very good work done by Mr.Pujari. It used to be very painful to see widows not allowed to come front during their childrens marriage. women who have lost their husbands will also have to come front and participate actively in all functions. this will be the dawn of a new era. hats off to Mr.Pujari for having taken this initiative.
