Udupi, July 20: Heavy rainfall has inflicted substantial damage estimated at Rs 55 crore in Udupi district, stated Dr. Vidya Kumari, Deputy Commissioner.

Speaking at a press meet at the DC office in Manipal on Saturday, July 20, Dr Vidya Kumari said, "Udupi has witnessed 1400mm of rainfall this July, marking a 60% excess. This intense rainfall has led to river flooding, causing widespread destruction of homes, electric poles, culverts, and schools."

Dr. Vidya Kumari noted, "The adverse weather has tragically claimed five lives – three from lightning, one due to a landslide, and one swept away by floodwaters. Each affected family has received Rs 5 lakh as compensation."

"The compensation for damaged houses will adhere to NDRF guidelines, with nearly 150 hectares of crops reported damaged. Coastal erosion has been observed at Blue Flag Beach and Hode Beach, prompting the installation of large rocks along the coastline to mitigate further erosion. Repair of rain-damaged roads will commence once the rainfall subsides," added Dr Vidya Kumari.

She further explained that the heavy rainfall has caused partial damage to 550 homes, 712 roads, and 57 kilometers of electric lines, affecting 20 transformers. MESCOM is actively assessing and replacing damaged poles, while the Forest Department has cleared 550 fallen trees that disrupted traffic. National highway authorities and other relevant agencies have been directed to promptly assess and repair the damage.

Emphasising proactive measures, Dr Vidya Kumari highlighted the establishment of 116 care centres to shelter affected individuals, a significant increase from the previous two multipurpose centers. Households experiencing floodwaters after 48 hours are receiving Rs 5,000 in compensation. Officials are also ensuring continuous clean drinking water supply amid concerns over well contamination due to flooding.

"Out of the 76 recognised villages in Udupi district, 63 village panchayats are situated in low-lying areas. A dedicated task force has been formed to coordinate relief efforts," Dr. Vidya Kumari added.

The press meet was attended by Mamatha Devi, ADC, Pratheek Bayal, chief executive officer of Zilla Panchayat, and other officials.
