Latest update at 2.50pm, IST

Mangalore, Nov 12: Ramesh Alape, father of accident victim Sushmitha, too breathed his last, according to the hospital sources on Saturday November 12.

He was admitted to Omega hospital this morning in a critical condition but treatment did not have any effect on him. So the family’s little hopes too have gone in vain.

It may be recalled that Ramesh was taking his daughter Sushmitha along in his two-wheeler to drop her to college. But unfortunately on the way the vehicle was hit by a lorry claiming Sushmitha’s life. Now the accident has proved even more costly, taking two lives in a day.

Mangalore, Nov 12: Sushmitha, a first year BA student of St Agnes College in the city lost her life after the two-wheeler she was traveling was hit by a lorry near Yekkur Gorigudda here on Saturday November 12 at around 8.15 am.

Sushmitha was traveling as a pillion rider along with her father, who was riding the Honda Activa vehicle. As she had to attend a camp they had left home pretty early but fate had cruel plan in store for them. The speeding lorry numbered KA.19.U 8740 hit the scooter as a result of which they fell down to the road and Sushmitha lost her precious life. Her father Ramesh Alape is seriously injured and has been admitted to Omega Hospital.

It is said that Ramesh is a slow rider and was always riding his vehicle carefully. The lorry driver after hitting the vehicle escaped from the spot in no time.

For a while no one came to the aid of the Ramesh and his daughter. A doctor who was on his way to Deralakatte saw the two on the road and put them in his Benz car and took them to Omega hospital.

Mangalore has the worst roads I have seen, I visited last year and was really sad to see the horrible condition of all roads, dont know what our government is doing and where all the money is going, people are paying taxes and nothing is being done to improve the situation. I was really sad to hear most of the rickshaw drivers saying they are so fed up that no action is being taken to repair these roads, some even refuse to take you to Kulshekar due to the badly damaged roads being very bumpy to drive on.

These bus and lorry drivers must be dealt with ruthlessly. They think they own the road and that the two wheelers dont exist on the road. So they easily take over these two wheelers and in the bargain brush against them and throw the two wheeler to the ground thus killing the riders.

Even strong helmets cannot help with such accidents. Most of the time the bus and lorry drivers are drunk. So that has to checked too.

Is is so sad to see two innocent lives lost.

It would be ridiculous if the rider wears a safety helmet and the pillion does not.....risk of injury is more in case of the pillion rider.......both should wear a helmet......have u ppl noticed that everytime there is a 2 wheeler accident the pillion rider is killed most of the times.....I guess the probability is true upto 90%

It's very sad.May their soul rest in peace.First of all in M'lore there are good roads and also bad roads now.But people are not afraid of traffic police and rules because of curruption and relationships which is the biggest weakness and escape route for these heavy vehicle drivers.More than that you find hardly any drivers[heavy and light] who follow proper lane during driving. All of us drive on the road where it's empty regardless of even direction of road and surprised to see a dead end and make reverse. This is very common in M'lore.May be remembering ALMIGHTY GOD during driving may be a good solution. GOD SAVE US

I just returned from Mangalore. I organised Nepal,Rajastan Mangalore tour for 24 Germans. Mangalore was the worst place for driving. The police just stand and do nothing. The pedestrans crossing at Thokotu is the worst I have seen.Indians are prowd to become a super power nation in the next decade. How many will be alive to achieve this grade with the rate of accidents. And no one seems to bother. We see the photos and are moved but in the next 5 minutes we forget and leave the sorrow to the beloved of the deceased. Sad but true. When will this change ?

Accidents happens everywhere, but it's occuring more in our DK districts now a days. I am not sure whose fault it is in this case, but i agree with the comments of Jossy Saldanha that driving in Dakshina Karnataka is a night mare. I have noticed that problem with the most of the vehichle riders here whoever it is two wheeler/four wheeler/heavy vehichles like lorry or buses, everyone wants to go first by overtaking other vehichles. As a result of this such accidents take place. Anyways this is a very sad incident took place in Mangalore. May their soul rest in peace.

1.India has to enforce STRICT TRAFFIC RULES just like any other countries.
2.Compulsory "DEFENSIVE DRIVING COURSE" for every drivers in every two years RENEWAL after CERTIFICATION.
This may bringdown the accident rate atleast 80% for sure, which means more people will be safe.

Traffic rules are very simple but nobody caring about it and that is causing for lose of life.

Very sad and horrifying accident.May the souls rest in peace.
Now a days we hear road accidents daily in eerstwhile DK dist comprising Udupi/Mangalore and most of them involving two wheelers. It is very very sad when young lives are lost in the accidents. It is high time now that RTO authorities of two districts sit together and draw up plan of actions in minimising such accidents.Safty rules should be made more strict and non compliance to be viewed seriously.
1.Two wheeler drivers should wear helmet compulsary.
2.Speed limit of two wheeler and big vehicles such as buses, trucks with in city limits should be made complulsary.
3.Non licence holderes driving the vehicle should be dealt with strictly. .
4.Especiaally in bigger vehicles, the routine checks of license should be made more regular in certain points. There are cases of driving bigger vehicles by non drivers/drunkards
and such incidents should be dealt with firmly and by heavy hand.
If rules are made strict by authorities concerned this will go a long way in avoiding recless driving.

Also the responsible Corporation/Municipality Chiefs for keeping the Roads in that bad condition. Look at the picture and see if it appears like a road or a graveyard? I do not know if it is a National Highway, State Highway or a Corporation Road - those who have kept this road unattended should also be punished.

Its fate that has destined the young life's death. From a technical perspective, pearched high over 2 meters, visibility from a truck cabin especially of smaller vehicles/ animals, becomes almost a blind spot at close distances. The truck in the picture bears a different reg. num than the report, daijiworld would do good to report the right details. The ekkur road is so badly maintained and in such a ramshackle condition, that riding a scooter or a small car is near impossible. The road needs urgent widening considering its a dual carriageway and a significantly high road divider too.

Very disheartening news. All appreciation goes to kindful Doctor who timely took them for providing the medical attention. In India, we are given to understand that there would be no legal implications (hope, now also it's allowed)if anyone helps out on such demanding situatuions out of humanity for saving the precious lives. Previously, people were hesistant to rescue for the reason as they would be called to witness the court proceedings on accident. Let us hope for the family to have strength to bear this loss.

Dear RP Mangalore, are you gone nuts the pillion should also were an helmet. Then what about the rash drivers, drivers on the their mobiles the other rules and regulations. By the way RP Mangalore are you byany way associated with helmets in the filed of Manufacturing or sales. If rules are followed there are no chances of any sort of accident.
My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.

Helmet is not the issue here. The person was driving slowly and carefully. This has happened to the person who was driving the scooter. It could have happened to the person who was on a cycle. The main problem was the rash driving of the person who was driving the lorry. The driver ran away because the mob would have beaten him even though the mob would not help the vicims. The people usually do not help the victims because they have to answer so many unnecessary questions from the police. Sometimes, the people who help are made to wait at the police station to finish the formalities. Anyway, the efforts of the doctor who took them to the hospital needs to be appreciated.

My condolences to the family of the victims.

Mr. Nagesh Nayak, Bangalore, this time your comments are perfect and apt. Having noted, Ramesh is safe driver, the speeding lorry driver must be at fault. At all accidents, it is been noted the driver escapes from the scene, instead of helping the victim to take to the nearest health care centers. An ordinance should be formulated and approved that no driver/s would leave the accident scene till the police attend to the case. I realize public would vent their anger on him, but he should bear it for his careless driving. Now, what happens, he will be in two days in the police custody and would be free. But the precious life is gone because of his carelessness.Drivers of all preventable accidents should be dealt with iron fist.

This is a very sad incident.

We need a stricter punishment for the reckless driving which causes the accidents. Fearless big vehicles are least bothered about the smaller vehicles. Life is very cheap in Mangalore. Traffic rules are not followed. Pedestrian safety is ignored. No under passes, no over head bridges and no good flyovers/separators. Just might is right in Mangalore.

Agitation to have get these is the need of the hour. All other modes of protest will fall into the deaf ears of the concerned authorities.

Only those who lost their loved ones will understand this need!!

O Lord Jesus Christ our God, You patiently endured the scourging and wounding of your sacred body, that You may save the souls and bodies of your people. Look now graciously on the suffering body of your servant Ramesh, and give him the strength to patiently bear whatever awaits him. Bless the people and all the means which will be used to restore him to health and grant that he may accept his bodily sufferings as a means of reparation for the salvation of his soul. For You, O Christ our God and Savior, are merciful and we give glory to You, together with Your eternal Father, and Your all-holy and life-giving Spirit, now and ever, and forever. Amen.

Lord God, source and destiny of our lives, in Your loving providence You gave us Sushmitha to grow in wisdom, age, and grace. Now You have called her to Yourself. We grieve over the loss of one so young and struggle to understand Your purpose. Draw her to Yourself and give her full stature in Christ. May she stand with all the angels and saints, who know Your love and praise Your saving will. Amen.

Absoluteley broken looking at the site. Poor father and daughter woke up and started so early in the morning to see his daughter achieve everything she can in life but fate has other plans, as they say. May her soul rest in peace and pray god for father's early recovery. Also appreciate the effort by the doctor, while I would have liked a few more in the crowd gathered there to show such intent and courage.

Nagesh wearing Helmet by both person on Bike or Scooter is very important, but we in India take it very easy it can save the persons life with getting less impact on their head.
Where in India the drivers don't drive fast? i am sure you too must be driving fast, if you have a car or two wheeler? Anyway in Karnataka we have more accident then anywhere in India.

    hey, Alex, Bangalore,

WHY YOU ARE NOT BLAMING SPEEDY TRUCK DRIVER.

IT WAS THE FAULT OF TRUCK DRIVER.

HE SHOULD BE HANGED IN PUBLIC.

WHY HE SPED AWAY FROM THE SPOT.

WEARING HELMET IS NOT COMPULSORY IN MAJORITY OF THE STATES IN INDIA.

AS PER MY VIEW WEARING HELMET IS NOT IMPORTANT BUT DRIVING SENSE IS MOST IMPORTANT.

IN THE ABOVE SAD INCIDENT THE TRUCK DRIVER WAS AT FAULT.

Helmets wearing should be made compulsory for the pillion riders.
The rule is in force in Delhi. Clearly had Sushmitha been wearing a helmet, she would have escaped with injuries. As such the pillion rider is more exposed to risk than the actual rider.
