19,448 cases registered in state over faulty number plates including 550 in Mangaluru

Daijiworld Media Network – Bengaluru (MS)

Bengaluru, Aug 27: Across Karnataka, police have registered 19,448 cases being registered in just 22 days against vehicles with faulty number plates, as part of a crackdown on drivers attempting to evade legal penalties for traffic offenses. Mangaluru police have registered 550 cases.

Bengaluru tops the list with 9,816 cases, followed by Mysuru with 672 cases, and Mangaluru with 550 cases. Kodagu and Ramanagara reported the fewest cases, with 21 and 35 respectively.

This operation is part of the traffic police's efforts to curb illegal activities and violations of traffic rules, which are rising alarmingly in major cities. Vehicles with faulty number plates are difficult to track in the event of a crime, providing cover for criminals involved in traffic violations and hit-and-run incidents.

According to the police, cases are being registered under the Motor Vehicles Act, and offenders are being instructed to install new number plates. Many of these vehicles are used in dangerous stunts on the roads, and drivers often cover the number plates with stickers, bend them, or use plates that can be manipulated to avoid detection.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), traffic and road safety ADGP Alok Kumar stated, “Faulty and illegal number plates are used to violate traffic rules and also in crimes.”

Police can't even stop people driving on opposite lanes. Today I saw two cars doing the same at surathkal junction, in front of traffic police.
