Puttur: Woman Set on Fire - Dowry Harassment Alleged

Puttur, Nov 16: Jamila (28), a resident of Sarepuni in Kedambadi village in the taluk, got admitted into the local hospital here on the night of Monday November 14, with the help of her neighbours. She has said that her husband and family members of her in-laws had demanded dowry and tried to torch her after pouring kerosene.

Jamila said she was being pestered by her husband and his family members, and that she was sleeping with her child at home on Monday night, when she suddenly woke up after feeling some liquid was being poured on her. She found to her horror that her clothes were doused in kerosene. She then ran away to the road in front of her home, and her neighbours helped her to get admitted to the hospital.

Jamila was married to Ashraf nine years back. It is gathered that 20 sovereigns of gold ornaments and one lac rupees in cash had been given in the form of dowry at the time of her marriage. Ashraf and his   family members were reportedly demanding her to bring four lac rupees additionally in the form of dowry since some time, and were mentally and physically harassing her.

“Ashraf, his father, Abdul Rahiman, mother-in-law, Bibi, and two sisters-in-law together poured kerosene on me on Monday night in an attempt to set me on fire,” Jamila said in a complaint filed with the rural police station here. The policemen visited the spot and undertook investigation, after registering a case.
