Kundapur, Oct 18: Due to low pressure in the Arabian Sea, violent waves and high winds are threatening homes in the Sanyasibale area of Gujjadi village and Kanchugodu in Hosadu village. Seven to eight houses are on the verge of being washed away.
Around 500 meters of land at Kanchugodu has eroded into the sea during this monsoon season. On Wednesday night, seawater entered three houses. The homes of Nagaraja Kharvi, Bikka Kharvi, Chandu Kharvi, Sanjeeva Kharvi, Nagesh Kharvi, and Mohan Kharvi, located just 20 to 30 meters from the shore, are in danger of collapse.
Waves continue to batter boats anchored on the beach, with some nets buried under the sand. Residents have long requested the construction of a retaining wall, but authorities have shown little concern. Two years ago, only a few stones were placed when erosion became severe, locals reported.
Residents expressed their distress, saying they had informed representatives, officials, and politicians from Wednesday night until Thursday morning, but received no response. If the erosion persists, they fear they will have to abandon their homes.
Some fishing boats that ventured out returned halfway due to the violent waves and strong winds. Many boats from Maravanthe, Gangolli, Uppunda, Navunda, and Shiroor have anchored at the outer port of Maravanthe, unable to reach their home ports.
