Karnataka Govt Mulls Banning Temple Ritual

Bangalore, Dec 7 (PTI): BJP Government in Karnataka is mulling a ban on "made snana", an annual religious ritual in which people roll on left over food consumed by Brahmins to fulfill vow at a famous temple in the state, in view of protests by various Dalit outfits against the practice.

Announcing this, Social Welfare Minister A Narayanaswamy told reporters here that he had directed the department officials to submit in next four days a report on the practice, observed at the famous Kukke Subrahmanya temple during 'shashti' festivities in Dakshina Kannada district.

Leaders of various Dalit organisations have been demanding a ban on "made snana" saying it hurt Dalit sentiments.

They contend that such customs were increasingly being used to subjugate Dalits and they were foisted on them in the name of tradition.

After getting a detailed report, the government would take a decision on the matter, Narayanaswamy said.

More than 2,000 devotees took part in the ritual on the concluding day of three-day festival held at the temple on November 30. The ritual is held as part of a vow for fulfillment of wishes.

I was expecting good response for my comment 'pro and against'the theory of urine therapy. It is imperative that people by and large accepted the facts except the 'two'who opted to write diverting the subject but pointing their comments towards me.When a person can't attack his opponent in natural way, with disguise he intends to revenge by acts like pouring poison into the comod where his opponent passed urine or excreta!!! Marking dislikes is an act equal to that!!!
I can give another example of hygenic nature our'special' people are following!!!Even today in rural places in toddy shops and arrack shops one can observe that glasses the people used to consume arrack or toddy is being washed only once in the evening after the closure of shops. There is no system of washing the glasses every time one drinks arracks/todday.What does it mean to the proponents of hygenic culture? Will government ban the system of working of toddy shop/arrack shop for not following hygene!!!

This ritual is a "sickness" of mob mentality, stooping below the human dignity. With all the education and educational instituions, one would think people are civilized but, I guess , are not.

Those who are talking against made made snana as unhigenic should think of 'Urine therapy system'in alternative medicine where the term refers to various applications of human urine for medicinal or cosmetic purposes including drinking of one's own urine and massaging one's skin by one's own urine. The therapy has vide proven health benifits. Our ex PM Late Morarji Desai is videly under urine thepy.Actually urine contains 95% water 2.5% urea and remaining mixturre of minerals. Hear made made snana is much more higenic than urine therapy for outer look. There are no known bad consequences of the ritual on the participants so far as reported.Ritual is being carried out voluntarily without any charges all all caste people as a mark of total surender to Lord Subramanya. When locals including Male Kudia tribe who conform inseperable bond between the temple and the ritual, why outsiders are poking their nose into this?Just to get publicity? Can anybody stop this ritual in coming years, only time will tell.Dr.Kamath's various statements on the subject has substance.

Dear Sachidanand Shetty, Mundkur/Dubai, Ganeshotsav was started by the freedom fighter Tilak in order to gather people to address them the importance of freedom and to fight for it. There was no sophisticated communication during those days unlike now. It was banned by British to conduct public meetings. So he started this as a ritual so British would allow it.

Dear Jacintha, Mangalore, no body instructed or compelled those people to perform Made Snana in any religious places. This whole World is running because of our strong feelings only. Even British dynasty fails to disburse the large gathering in the name of Sarwajanik Ganeshothsav started in Pune by Great Freedom Fighter Late Bala Gangadhar Tilak. One thing is sure in this part of World that, when there is limitation of Law or Order to control Mass Population religious fervor can control them well. Let the people follow their belief as long as there is no compellation or cruelty is involved

Leaving aside the class divide, one must think if developed society should permit this. We have resisted rituals and practices of any community, if the practice is against the dignity of human being. No skin disease can be cured by rolling on the left-overs. And Dr. Acharya should know this better. How does rest of the country cure their skin disease? How do other communities within mangalore treat themselves too?

On one side we harp about human rights, dignity, forced conversions, and all such, on the other side, we facilitate a demeaning practice such as rolling on the left overs of a section of people. Political leaders and religious leaders, who are encouraging or keeping mum, please understand, that you are sinning against the nation, society, human kind.
