Karnataka to provide one LPG cylinder per household a month, assures food minister Muniyappa

Bengaluru, Mar 12: There is no shortage of domestic LPG cylinders in Karnataka, and each household will now receive one cylinder per month, instead of every 25 days, food minister K H Muniyappa assured on Wednesday.

The announcement followed a query by Congress MLA H D Ranganath during zero hour in the state assembly. Responding, Muniyappa outlined the current supply situation and government measures.

“Following the chief minister’s instructions, I held meetings with oil company officials to review the situation. Even amid the ongoing war, domestic LPG cylinders will remain available. Officials have confirmed sufficient stock. Around 20–30% of LPG production is domestic, with the remainder imported. Ten Indian tankers are en route. Until their arrival, a 14-kg cylinder will be supplied to a family of 4–5 members once a month,” Muniyappa said.

He warned, “This is a time of crisis, so no one should register to obtain extra cylinders. Anyone attempting to sell cylinders illegally will face strict action. The central government has issued ESMA (Essential Supplies Monitoring Act) to prevent such violations.”

The minister added, “We will conduct weekly review meetings to monitor the situation and update the Chief Minister. Residents should use cooking gas sparingly. There is no severe shortage, and after the war, supply will return to normal.”

Addressing commercial supply, Muniyappa stated, “LPG will be prioritised for hospitals, schools, hostels, and other essential services. Hotels, wedding halls, and convention centres may experience minor inconvenience, but they must cooperate. During this serious national situation, hoarding cylinders is unacceptable,” he urged.
