Karkala, Nov 1: Buffalo training is in full swing at Miyar as the countdown begins for the Kambala season.
The first Kambala organized by the district Kambala committee will be held at Pilikula on November 17, with the Dakshina Kannada district administration making all necessary arrangements after a long gap. Junior and sub-junior Kambala races will be held at Panapila on November 9.
Buffaloes are undergoing rigorous training in the Negilu and Hagga categories at the Lava Kusha Kambala pond in Miyar. Training for junior buffaloes began in June, while senior buffaloes started their training at the end of August and early September. In addition to weekends, training sessions are also held on weekdays. Buffaloes are brought in from distant areas, including Mangaluru, Kundapur, Byndoor, Beltangady, Bantwal, and Mani.
Training is also being conducted at Moodbidri and Kodange, with over 40 pairs of buffaloes participating on weekends and eight to ten pairs on weekdays.
The Lava Kusha Kambala pond in Miyar is well-equipped with clean water, a pavilion for spectators, a spacious resting area for buffaloes, and a continuous water supply. A sensor timing system allows buffalo owners to monitor the exact race times during training.
Vijayakumar Kanginamane, convener of the Kambala referees committee, stated, “Many Kambala jockeys come to Miyar for Kudi Kambala to train their buffaloes. The committee has implemented strict rules this year, and technology will be used to ensure accurate results.”
