Mangalore, Dec 7: Chemistry is a fundamental aspect of international science and its scientific temperament can help raise extra-ordinary discoveries, said Dr B S Sherigar, former vice-chancellor, Kuvempu University, Shimoga.

He was delivering the inaugural speech at a one-day programme for High School Students to mark ‘International Year of Chemistry’ organized by the department of chemistry, St Agnes College Conference hall on Wednesday December 7.

He further quoted the example of Madam Marie Curie who was the first lady professor in chemistry and first noble laureate. Even her husband was a Nobel Prize winner, he noted.

Appreciating the organizers Dr Sherigar said that observing the ‘international year of Chemistry’ by holding such programmes will make a good impact on the lower and middle level school children and will inspire them to carry out scientific discoveries. The development of next generation depends on the school students and that would be a ‘Science age’, he added.

Prof Dinesh Chowta, Nodal Officer, SDM College, Ujire was present. Prof Ronald Mascarenhas, co-coordinator, department of the chemistry welcomed the gathering. Dr H Jayanth delivered the introductory speech. Dr Ita M D’Souza compered and Helen Serrao delivered the vote of thanks. On the occasion three lectures were conducted.

Dr.Sherigar, with so much religious fanaticism being observed in this world, it looks like instead of looking forward for a SCIENCE AGE we are going back to the DARK AGE.

Someone had rightly said - I believe in science even when I am not sick.
