Bangalore, Dec 10: Senior JDS leader and former state minister, Alangur R Srinivas (65), died on Friday December 9 in a city-based private hospital due to massive heart attack. He is survived by wife and daughter.

Srinivas, who was in Mulbagal in Kolar district, had suffered from fever two days back. As treatment at the local hospital failed to heal him, he had been shifted to Wockhardt Hospital here two days back.

His body was kept in front of Sandarya Paradise in Mulbagal for enabling people to pay their last respects. Thousands of people took part in the funeral, which took place at 7.30 pm on Friday. Former Chief Minister, H D Kumaraswamy, district in-charge minister, Varthur Prakash, MLA, Amaresh, and several other dignitaries from the state and neighbouring states, were present.

Srinivas had begun his political career as a member of Land Tribunal in 1977. He joined Reddy Congress party in 1978 under the leadership of former union minister, M V Krishnappa, and shifted to Congress after two years. After some years, he joined JDS, and had served as minister for horticulture in J H Patel’s cabinet.

Schools, colleges, business establishments and other institutions in Mulbagal taluk were closed down as mark of respect for the departed leader on Friday. In state assembly, deputy speaker, N Yogeesh Bhat, moved a motion condoling the death of Srinivas, while council chairman, D H Shankara Murthy, moved a similar motion in the council.
