Mangaluru, Nov 14: St Agnes CBSE School, Bendore, Mangaluru, hosted its Annual Sports Meet with tremendous energy and enthusiasm. The two-day event showcased spirited competition, teamwork, and a deep sense of school pride, creating unforgettable memories for students, teachers, and parents alike.
The grand sports meet commenced with a formal guard of honour. The event's president, Sr Dr Maria Roopa AC, joint secretary of St Agnes Institutions, was joined by chief guest Clifford J Joshua, an accomplished Asian athlete and assistant manager at Union Bank of India, Zonal Office, Mangaluru, along with other dignitaries. Their arrival was celebrated by the stirring melodies of the school band.
The flag was carried by notable sports achievers of the school: Janicia Saldanha, sports minister; Jewel Crasta, deputy sports minister; and outstanding volleyball players Sanvi S Ira and Priyanka Correa. The squad troops, prepared to demonstrate their marching skills, moved in unison to welcome the honoured guests, who acknowledged them with a salute. The ceremony began with the raising of the school flag, symbolizing unity and discipline. The Pride Team introduction allowed team members to present themselves to the program's president, the chief guest, the principal, the PTA vice president, and the march past judges: Narayan Sherigar, physical director of St Agnes Special School; Sachitha, physical director of Carmel School; and Praveen Lobo, physical director of Besant High School.
Students performed a graceful prayer dance, conveying gratitude and aspirations for a successful day. Teacher Sumana welcomed the audience warmly, encouraging everyone to embrace the spirit of celebration.
A highlight of the event was the ceremonial torch relay, symbolizing competition and perseverance. Anvita, a national-level karate player in Grade 8, began the relay, passing the torch to Jehann Isri, a talented Grade 9 badminton player. The torch was subsequently carried by Riddhima Ranjith (Grade 8), Rinisha Vanya Mathias (Grade 9), and Saanvi (Grade 10), before being handed over to Adwika KP, a national-level athlete in Grade 9. Sports minister Janicia Saldanha led the oath-taking, emphasizing integrity, fairness, and respect.
The meet was inaugurated by Sr Dr Maria Roopa AC, who, along with Clifford J Joshua, released a dove to mark the occasion. Joshua inspired students with a speech on confidence, perseverance, and using obstacles as opportunities for growth, sharing his personal journey of hard work and resilience.
Students from grades 5 and 6 performed a free-hand exercise, highlighting fitness, coordination, and teamwork. Neoma Fernandes and Jane Goretto hosted the inaugural ceremony. Teacher Shalet concluded it with a vote of thanks.
The students participated in a range of track events showcasing their strength, agility, and endurance, including shot put, high jump, long jump, and 100m, 200m, and 400m sprints. Team sports like basketball, throwball, and volleyball fostered school spirit and collaboration. Recreational games such as the hoops relay, treasure hunt, race challenge, color ball throw, ring game, musical chairs, and ball throw added to the excitement. Champions were recognized with medals and certificates for their achievements.
The valedictory program concluded the sports day on a high note. Chief guest Geeta P, inspector of the excise department, attended along with other dignitaries Namratha Rao, associate secretary, PTEC; principal Maria Sarika AC; KG coordinator Sr Letitia AC; and Sr Reshma Dsouza AC. The school band presented a guard of honour for the guests. The ceremony featured an invigorating jumble march and a welcome dance, with Teacher Lavina Peris extending greetings.
Geeta P expressed her gratitude and urged students to embody sportsmanship, discipline, and perseverance. She commended the school for nurturing athletes and providing opportunities for diverse sporting activities.
Winners of individual and team events and the best march past teams were honored. The event was hosted by Shannon Saldanha and Nidhi Nirvani. The flame was extinguished, and the school flag was lowered to conclude the festivities. Teacher Josna delivered a vote of thanks, acknowledging everyone’s contributions. The day ended with the National Anthem, fostering pride and unity.
The Annual Sports Meet 2024 at St Agnes CBSE School was a resounding success, inspiring values of teamwork, resilience, and excellence. Faculty and PTA support added to the vibrant, community-focused atmosphere.
