Udupi, Dec 18: The international workshop on Epidemiology and Biostatistics organized by the department of public health and department of statistics Manipal University in association with the College of Public Health of The Ohio state University, Columbus, Ohio, USA, was declared open on by Dr Ramdas M Pai chancellor, Manipal University.

Dr Ramchandra Kamath, professor and head, department of public health welcomed the dignitaries, speakers and all the participants who are attending the conference.

The six day workshop from December 16 to December 22 has 100 registered participants from all over India, representing various states.

Dr Amy Ferketich, associate professor, Ohio State University released the first edition of the Enewsletter  “HYGIEA” of the department of public health which will be bimonthly and focused on departmental activities and events of public health importance.

Dr H N Nagaraja, professor and chair, Division of Biostatistics, the Ohio state university addressed the gathering and gave an overview of Ohio State University. He expressed in terms of numbers different dimensions of the university and its activities. He emphasized the goal of the workshop was to make the participants more adept at using statistics effectively for research and public health practice in India.

Dr G K Prabhu, Registrar, Manipal University, spoke about how the Manipal University began with the Medical College in 1953 and the Engineering College in 1957 and has now grown to having 21 institutions and thousands of students.
 
He spoke of the Manipal as a campus that is Multidisciplinary, Multicultural and of Multinational that is eager to collaborate with international institutions in the areas of research and training.

Dr Amy Ferketich, addressed the gathering and spoke about the various courses offered at the College Of public health at the Ohio university and she is pleased to be associated with workshop and looked forward to sharing her experiences and learning’s in the field of epidemiology with the participants.

She mentioned that it was her third visit to India and that every visit has been a revelation of the beauty of the country and the people. The vote of thanks was delivered by Dr S Nair, HOD, department of statistics.
