Udupi, Dec 5: Once every 13 months, the majestic planet Jupiter comes close to Earth, offering a dazzling view in the night sky. This December, the spectacle reaches its peak with Jupiter’s opposition on December 7.
During this celestial event, the Sun and Jupiter align on opposite sides of Earth, making Jupiter rise in the eastern sky as the Sun sets in the west. This alignment allows Jupiter to shine brightly all night long, appearing larger and more radiant than usual.
Jupiter, which typically orbits at an average distance of 780 million kilometres from the Sun, will be just 610 million kilometres away from Earth during this time its closest approach this year.
Those with telescopes or binoculars will have an even more spectacular view.
In addition to Jupiter, the yellow-hued Rohini star, located approximately 65 light-years from the Sun, will add to the celestial charm. Observers can spot the glowing Jupiter near Rohini, enhancing the beauty of the night sky.
Dr A P Bhat from Udupi encourages everyone to seize this opportunity to witness Jupiter’s splendor and enjoy this rare astronomical alignment.
