Mangaluru, Dec 6: Illegal dumping of waste along roadsides remains a growing environmental concern, posing serious challenges to public health, safety, and community well-being. Discarded items such as plastics, tires, and household waste clog drains, leading to flooding and exacerbating the spread of diseases. Despite the installation of CCTV cameras, warning signboards, and numerous awareness campaigns promoting waste management, this issue continues to persist, underscoring the urgent need for stricter regulations, improved waste disposal facilities, and greater public accountability.
The Valencia-Gorigudda stretch in the city has become a hotspot for illegal dumping, with plastic waste and alcohol bottles frequently discarded along the roadside. While CCTV cameras and fine-warning signboards have been placed, the cameras appear poorly maintained, and public indifference toward the warnings from the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) remains evident. It is also unclear whether fines are being effectively enforced.
In addition to waste dumping, the stretch suffers from years of neglect regarding road maintenance, compounding the area's deteriorating condition.
Stronger action is necessary, including effective enforcement of fines, regular repair and maintenance of roads, and proper functioning of CCTV cameras to ensure adequate monitoring and deterrence. Addressing these issues holistically will help restore the area's environment and improve the quality of life for its residents.
