Beltangady, Dec 7: The construction of the retainer wall along the Charmadi Ghat section, which falls under Chikkamagaluru district, is nearly complete.
The ghat section was severely damaged during the floods and rains of 2019, causing traffic disruptions for several months. Subsequently, repair work began on both the Dakshina Kannada and Chikkamagaluru sections. The works on the Dakshina Kannada side were completed at a rapid pace, but the retainer wall construction on the Chikkamagaluru side progressed more slowly due to the challenging terrain, including deep valleys and more dangerous spots.
The retainer wall work, costing around Rs 19.5 crore, is now almost finished. Arrangements have been made to direct rainwater flow in several areas, with walls more than one meter high built at eight to ten spots, while retainer fences have been installed in other areas. Asphalting work is still pending in some sections where repairs were carried out, and pits that formed during the work need to be filled.
The Charmadi Ghat section under Chikkamagaluru district has numerous waterfalls and streams, but the force of the water has been reduced. The area is lush and green due to the recent rains, though mist that forms in the early mornings and late evenings is causing some inconvenience to motorists.
Of the total 25 km length of Charmadi Ghat, 12 km falls under Dakshina Kannada district. The tendering process for the development of the Dakshina Kannada section is complete, and work is expected to begin soon. A request has been made to provide tar for the Chikkamagalur side, according to Chintamani Kamble, AEE, NHAI, Chikkamagaluru.
