Mangaluru: St Aloysius University holds Human Rights Day

Mangaluru, Dec 10: St Aloysius (Deemed to be University) observed human rights day on Tuesday, December 10 in Sanidhya Hall.

Dr Rose Veera D'Souza, chair of Arts and Humanities of the University was the chief guest for the day. Dr Praveen Martis, SJ, vice chancellor of St Aloysius (Deemed to be University) presided over the programme. Dr Melwyn D'Cunha, SJ, pro-vice chancellor of the university, Dr Alwyn D'Sa registrar of the college, Dr Charles Furtado, director of the Admin Block, staff and students were present for the above program.

Dr Rose Veera D'Souza, in her speech, explained the distinct classification of generation rights and lauded the contribution of Hansa Mehta, the Indian delegate to the United Nations Commission on Human Rights in 1947-48 who was responsible for incorporating Gender Component to the UDHR. She gave an account of Human Rights and explained the responsibility of the social science students at St Aloysius (Deemed to be University) to spread the awareness on human rights. The responsibility to promote the understanding on Women and Child Rights is very urgent, she added. She also mentioned the urgent need to promote environmental rights.

Dr Praveen Martis SJ, in his speech, spoke about human rights as a value to promote democratic ethos. He urged the audience to know more about the SDG goals and stressed the need to create awareness on basic human rights.

Anamika shared her thoughts about the basic rights, such as gender equality, respect the elders, right to education, right to respect each other for better transformative society.

Parvathi compered the programme. Glory proposed a vote of thanks.
