Puttur: Cyber fraudster tricks man; money debited instantly after phone call

Daijiworld Media Network – Puttur (MS)

Puttur, Dec 13: Cyber fraudsters continue to devise new techniques to swindle money from unsuspecting individuals. In a recent incident, a man lost Rs 161 from his bank account immediately after receiving a call from an unknown number.

A media representative from Uppinangady received a call from a stranger on Thursday morning. As soon as the call connected, it was abruptly cut off. Immediately afterward, money was debited from the bank account linked to the mobile number.

Upon contacting the bank, it was confirmed that Rs 161 was deducted since there was insufficient balance to transfer Rs 14,839. Shortly after, the victim received another call from the same number but chose not to answer.

The calls were made from the number 68778220051, and a case has been filed with the cybercrime police.

Digitalization across the board, connecting all sorts of cards, bank accounts etc to the main card, which itself is vulnerable without proper pilot testing & with no adequate checks and balances in place has created havoc in the financial system; this scamming business has become a parallel economy of sorts!

Yesterday in 45 minutes I received four calls one from Bolivia, Qatar, Samoa the Qatar number the recorded message says that it is a call from TRAI. One call said that my credit card will be blocked when I do not have a credit card. People should not accept a call from a foreign country, accept calls with +91 India code. Unless you accept calls from the Gulf. Flourishing after 2014 all fake stunts.

If what is reported in this news story is true and if the victim has not provided any sensitive credentials to the scamster, it only means that there is some loophole in the Bank's software. In this case the bank customer cannot be held resposible for the loss. Just by picking up the phone call, one cannot be responsible for the loss. The bank customer should file a complaint in the Consumers Forum and ask for compensation. It is the duty of the Bank manager to follow up the case. He is being paid his salary from the bank custmers' funds. This kind of things are now happening oftener after tge merger of lour local banks with Gujarati banks.

The complainant's story is unacceptable; he has taken the call and gone ahead with the instructions of the scammer; moreover 68 is the country code of Afghanistan, which he should have seen before taking the call and disconnected the call immediately!

68 is the country code of Afghanistan; I too recieved a phone call with the same code; it was a recorded message warning me that my SIM will be immediately blocked because of some illegal activities, and asked me to press #9, which I didn't do; thrice the same message was repeated, later automatically got disconnected! I am sure in this person's case, he might have pressed #9 and his phone got hacked!

It is advisable not to lift unknown calls... If service oriented calls have to be received have a separate number that does not have any linkage to any financial or Aadhar platforms... God forbid the possibility that without doing anything people loosing money while asleep... World we live has become worse than a jungle...

Rs 161 is too small to file a police complaint. Victim should have let it go

Avoid taking calls from any number that does not start with +91 unless you known the caller. Such fraud calls are generated from a device called magic jack.
