2025 govt holiday calendar disappoints state employees

Bengaluru, Dec 16: While people are gearing up to welcome 2025, the government’s holiday calendar for the upcoming year has left state government employees and teachers dissatisfied, as several holidays fall on Sundays.

Government employees typically prefer holidays on Saturdays or Mondays, as Sunday is already a common holiday. Such alignment allows for long weekends, enabling them and the public to plan short getaways. However, the 2025 calendar shows seven holidays landing on Saturdays and Sundays.

On Thursday, the government released lists of public and restricted holidays for 2025. The state government clarified that, in addition to second and fourth Saturdays, the declared days in the list would also be official holidays.

The union government's calendar includes 17 gazetted holidays and 34 restricted holidays. Among the 17 gazetted holidays, all are considered mandatory.

As per the rules, every employee is entitled to only 12 optional holidays, out of which three may be chosen for personal, religious, cultural, or family reasons. Additionally, one optional holiday can be added for Dasara celebrations.
