Mangalore: University to Restrict Honorary Doctorates to Three Per Year

Mangalore, Dec 25: At the syndicate meeting of Mangalore University held here on Friday December 23, it is learnt that a decision to restrict the annual honorary doctorates three towards maintaining the sanctity of this honour, was taken. The decision was taken, following detailed discussions on the issue.

In the past, the university’s decision to confer honorary doctorates on people from social service, politics, and business, had given rise to a controversy.  In some recent years, seven to eight honorary doctorates had been given. Sources in the university said that the honorary doctorates will be restricted to only three this year too..

Honorary doctorates had been awarded last year to scholar, Bannanje Govindacharya, Tulu writer, D K Chowta, and former director general of police and inspect general, Ajai Kumar Singh.

Sources said that the meeting concurred with the opinions expressed by several members that examination process should be concluded by April 1, and resutls should be declared in May. The colleges should reopen on June 1, they opined. The members also felt that the postponing of college reopening from November 18 to December 5 this time, which was caused by change on examination time table and delay in valuation process, should be avoided. The meeting also envisaged taking action against teaching staff who escape from valuation duties, which was particularly rampant in BBM degree paper valuation this time, resulting in delayed reopening of colleges.
