Gaza, Jan 8: Israeli airstrikes have killed at least 49 Palestinians in the past 24 hours, according to medical sources in Gaza. Among the dead are five children killed in attacks on tents located in the so-called ‘safe zone’ of al-Mawasi.

The death toll in Gaza has now reached a staggering 45,885, with over 109,196 wounded since the conflict escalated following the Hamas-led attacks on Israel on October 7, 2023. In Israel, 1,139 people were killed in the initial attacks, and more than 200 remain in Hamas captivity.

Trump demands hostage release

US President-elect Donald Trump reiterated his warning to Hamas, demanding the release of all Israeli captives before his January 20 inauguration. Trump has previously stated that “all hell will break out” if Hamas fails to comply.

Lebanon concerns rise

In Lebanon, Prime Minister Najib Mikati expressed concerns over continued Israeli violations of the Israel-Hezbollah truce deal. Lebanese forces have deployed to southern regions vacated by Israeli forces as tensions remain high along the border.

A humanitarian crisis

The situation in Gaza has drawn international condemnation, with humanitarian groups raising alarms about the escalating death toll and the impact on civilians in so-called "safe zones." Efforts to mediate a ceasefire have faced significant challenges amid the ongoing violence.

The international community continues to watch closely as the conflict threatens to destabilize the broader region further.
