Mangalore, Jan 8: "The police do so much for us, you provide security and maintain law and order in the city. It is our duty to appreciate your work," said Nigel Colaco, while speaking at a programme held at the office of the city police commissioner on Saturday January 7 to distribute annual scholarships to policemen's children.

The programme was conducted by NRI entreprenuer Ronald Colaco and family to celebrate Christmas and New Year joy with police officers of the district.

Following in his philanthropic father Ronald Colaco's footsteps, Nigel Colaco on his own account has initiated the scholarship programme, wherein he would be assisting deserving children of police personnel to pursue further studies.

Nigel added, "We will continue to contribute a sum of Rs 11 lac as scholarships to policemen's children to encourage them to pursue higher studies. It will be given to the meritorious children of police personnel who have passed SSLC and PUC." He wished that this would help the students to study hard and strive for better results.

Seemanth Kumar Singh, in his presidential address thanked the Colaco family for their generosity and for sharing the joy of Christmas with the police. He asked them to continue the good work in the coming years too.

"Though the family had asked to celebrate Christmas season with the policemen of the district, the busy schedule did not let us. Even though it’s been delayed, the officers are happy to share the occasion with the family here," he said.

"Let the good work of this family motivate others to help the society," he added.

Jean and Nigel Colaco personally distributed cakes to the children, the family of the policemen, and to those present at the occasion.

DCP Dharmaiah welcomed the gathering. DCP Mutturaya and Para Shetty were present on the dais. Venkatesh Prasad proposed the vote of thanks. Harischandra Bikapandy compered the event.

It’s admirable that Colaco Family have thought to help the neglected section of our society. In these few months we have been hearing about corruption and particularly at the lower level. The salaries offered to Police personal are pathetic and their leaving standards are also the same. By giving a helping hand to educate their children is a step forward in the right direction. It will for some extant keep their children’s future secured and also will help to irradiate some amount of corruption in its own way.

    Dear Nigel,

What you have done is something out of this world. Adults in your age think of fun, frolic and masti while you have contributed Rs.11 lakhs scholarships from your own fund and even borrowing to give new life to the poor. Education is an asset for life. You have given those children a life. Your parents must be in the world of their own to watch the legacy of Colaco's is being percolated down to the family. What a wonderful act. We are proud of you. Keep the good work. May god bless you. Wish you all the best.

This world is surrounded by self centred people. They believe in one thing- amassing wealth and they will go any extent to achieve that. We hope your act of generosity will have positive effect on the young generation and adults to make this world of poor to smile .

I am glad to see that this family is doing so much of good work. We have so many rich people around us but no one shares with others. In India Policemen are paid very low compared to others. Such type of gesture by giving scholarships to meritorious students will certainly go a long way in boosting their morale. Continue this good work Mr Nigel.

Well done Nigel. The benefits of money donated/spent on education remain for ever. Because education of a person can not be taken away, robbed or lost. When they reach higher positions with the financial help by people like you they will thank God for your goodwill.
Hence whether to children of Police Force or any other deserving students, keep on helping like your Dad.

Goethe said it well: Human life runs its course in the metamorphosis between receiving and giving. But seldom people give in the measure they receive quite often from every quarter. In this perspectives Colaco family must be lauded for their great contribution to our society. May their tribe increase in the society for the transformation of our humanity.

The best gift one can any one is the great gift of Education. Here it is seen that Nigel has provided for the education of the children of the policemen. Our police force is doing a lot of good work for most of us. Of course there are some critics. However it is not good to generalize and blame all the policemen. In every fold there may be a black sheep but it does not mean that all sheep are black.

I had the privilege to address the police force some time ago when during the 'QUESTION TIME' a lot was said by the policemen. Unlike people in service who are governed by labour laws, policemen provide their dedicated services to the public disregarding their comforts After spending an entire day for the service of people it is not uncommon that they are summoned any part of the night on urgent calls.

Therefore any kind of service rendered to the policemen and their children will go a long way to make better people of tomorrow.

Great job. We must start a club for the police people so many can donate and this money can be utilized for the police personals for their need like health care, housing, education, and awarding for the good job. This may help to prevent corruption, build up faith, peace & harmony, and friendly culture in our country.
