Mangalore: Girl Mistakes Rat Poison for Toothpaste, Dies

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, Jan 13: Fatima Feeda (2), daughter of Abubakker from Iddya, Suratkal near here, breathed her last on Thursday January 12, after mistakenly applying rat poison which looked like toothpaste to her teeth.

The girl, who saw a white paste in a tube, had applied it to her teeth on Wednesday, thinking it to be toothpaste. Her mother, who saw this, immediately washed the mouth of the girl with water, and took her to a nearby doctor. It is learnt that the doctor advised the mother to bring her child to him only if she vomits.

At night, the girl developed complication, upon which the girl was taken to the doctor again. As per his advice, she was admitted into a hospital. By Thursday evening, poison spread all over her body, and Fatima lost her life. The doctors collected blood sample from the girl’s body and sent it for tests, before conducting post mortem.

A case was registered in Suratkal police station, and investigation has been taken up.

This is really a tragic accident, can happen to any human being. She is only a two year's child no one can blame her for this,as it happened to me two weeks back not rat poison but odomus(mosquito cream). I had been to my brother's house for his daughter's Frist holy Communiuon, as I was a day early for the occasion me and my cousins selpt in the portico on the frist floor. I told my Sister-in-law "I forgot to get my toothpaste please keep one here". So she kept one which I used in the morning. I think one of the servant girls had taken them back after that. After the holy communion many guest's left who had stayed overnight. As I was feeling very sleepy I told my sister-in law I would go to sleep early after dinner in the same place where I slept yeaterday. She said O.K. and asked the servant to provide me a materess & bedsheet. After food I went to sleep, as there were few people I was the only one who slept there. I got up early that morning before the Sunrise, cause I had to travel to M'lore with my Cousin in his car, "who had said we will go early in the morning". As soon as I got up in the morning with half sleep eyes I saw the Tooth paste, took the Brush from bag and applied the paste and started brushing. I felt the taste of the paste a bit strange which I had never tasted in my life, so I came to see what Tooth paste it was, it was indeed a special tooth paste Odomus. I think someone kept Odomus as there were many mosquitos, I never told this incident to anyone.

This is the quality of healthcare we have in India. The casual attitude of doctor and uneducated nature of parents cost the life.Had it been in developed country the clinic wouldnot have sent the patient home without making 100%sure it is safe to do so.

Most secure places have most ghastly accidents.
How can we make our homes more safe?
It is not easy to overcome the loss of a 2 year old child.
parents spend maximum hardship in raising a child to 2 years and she must have been such a pet for all in the house.
We can only pray to God to give enough courage and strength to the parents and near ones to bear this unfathomable loss.

Recently my one year old son swallowed napthaline ball kept in the cupboard. Taking no chances i took him to the toxicology dept. of a hospital and had him treated there. They made all the necessary blood tests (for traces of any poison) and had his kidneys and liver too checked for any possible damages. After having made sure he was 100% safe did I take him home. Mind you all this within one day only that too in goverment hospital.
My point is do we have departments like these (for that matter even burns)in any of our hospitals in Mangalore to treat such cases?
Better safe to keep all Medicines and Pest controls OUT of reach of Children. Its impossible to be after them 24/7.

Very Sad news, these kind of accidents are 100% preventable if parents takes little attention with their kids. Spend 10min every week for safety check and go around your home and find out what are the hazard /potential risk exist inside the home( Electrical , Fire , chemical & fall in case you live in high raise building)..
    Some tips:
a)Move unwanted materials ( paper box or paper material) from kitchen .
    b) Check & replace electrical sockets( damaged socket /overloaded point) loose plugs are potential to cause fire
    c) Keep chemical /liquids( washing liquid/clorex etc) on overhead cabinets or locked for childrens safety
If we keep everything chemical ,soap, paste, rat poison, cockroach killer, tubesxyz etc. in one location even elders can also put it in to their mouth when they are in hurry .
    d) Regularly check gas hose/hose ends for leak( put soap liquid and watch for bubble)
e)Make habit of closing main valve of gas cylinder when you go out or sleep
    f) Keep fire extinguisher in house ( you get smaller FE in market) ,
    g) Clean wash room /toilet regularly & keep dry to avoid children/elderly slipping due to wet area
Last but not the least ensure you have good lock system of all windows /balcony door so that children will not open the window easily .Many of you know about these however seeing recent silly accidents I thought to share these safety tips.ONE THING ACCIDENTS R PREVENTABLE.

Very sad to hear. Pls do not blame only parents. why did the doctor send back the little child back without doing the blood check or keeping the child under observation or immediately directing to hospital where all facilities were available. I believe that, if doctor acted as i wrote above, all would have gone well. God give the parents to bare loss. .

A sad indeed.Looks a lack in medical treatment, investigation and negligence from the parents itself. The Dr.should took this matter bit seriously.Always keep the the poisonus things away from the children, in a locking system,to avoid untold incidents.

Very sad and tragic. Parents need to be very cautious when small children are around. Pls. do not give birth if you cannot take care. just because children cannot speak out it doesnot mean they should suffer. how come the doctor tell to bring the child only if she vomits. It is wrong, The child is very small hence resistance power is very less or negligent. once the child has taken the poison it should have been flushed out from the system. The child should have been immediately admitted to hospital.

Ofcourse the eldr s duty to not keep such things to reach children's hand. But also i noticed some rat poison which is in the tube is just like a tooth paste and it is red/white attractive colour. i just don t understand why the manfactures produce poisons in such a way that, specially the children attracted by them. Why they don t understand to attract animals colur is not important.so why cant they give a ugly colour ? Any howit is sad to here suchthings. Let almigthy god grant eternal rest to her let the parents get strength to over come the sorrow.

Very very tragic end. The parents should have kept the tube, out of the reach of the child. They should not have brought the girl back home, unless a complete test was conducted. Anyway, the parents/doctor must have treated her in good faith without expecting such a tragic end. May God grant her soul peace and give the parents strength to over come the sorrow.
