Udupi, Jan 14: In a unique gesture, former Muslim students of Innanje Sri Hayavadanaswamy PU College, which functions under Sode Mutt, are preparing to offer ‘Horekanike’ for Paryaya festival.
The institution had been originally started by Sri Vishwendrateertha Swamiji of Sode Mutt in 1943 to enable rural children to pursue education. The school, in course of time, progressed into high school and PU college, and an English medium school is also being run there now. Sri Vishwottamateertha Swamiji continued to support the institution his Guru had founded. The school also had functioned as a residential school in the past. Several former Muslim students of the institution want to pay back to some extent for the favours they received from the institution.
Retired tahsildar, Salim, who was educated here, expresses gratefulness for this institution by saying that he could scale heights in his life because of good education, support for extracurricular activities, and good food he got in this school. Abdul Haque, a district surveyor by profession, also says the school here made a lasting imprint on his life by providing quality education and free food. Shabbi Ahmed Khaji from Koppalangady, an entrepreneur settled in the Gulf, Abdul Ghani Khaji, who runs an industry in Bangalore, Sheikh Mansoor Ahmed, an entrepreneur from Kaup Mallar, and retired surveyor, Akbar Ali from Mallar, and many others are proud about their primary education they got here, and the institution which helped them to move up in life.
It is gathered that the former Muslim students of the school will be delivering ‘Horekanike’ either on Sunday or Monday for Paryaya.
Initiatives like these reinforce communal harmony, religious tolerance, and harmonious coexistence. As such, the people in general have been appreciative of such gestures from non-Hindus, who have broken the shackles of conservation and are determined to show to the world that they are large-hearted, benevolent, and prepared to take a few steps forward to ensure peace and tranquility in society.
