Zelensky to visit US for rare earth minerals deal worth $350 billion

Washington DC, Feb 26: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is set to visit the United States to finalize a potential agreement involving Ukraine's rare earth minerals in exchange for USD 350 billion, military equipment, and continued support in its ongoing conflict, CNN reported.

According to a Ukrainian official, the terms of the agreement were finalized after revisions to ensure clarity on how the deal would contribute to Ukraine’s security and stability.

While details remain undisclosed, a significant hurdle in negotiations had been the Trump administration’s earlier demand for a USD 500 billion share of Ukraine’s rare earth and other mineral resources in return for past US aid to Kyiv—an offer that Zelensky had previously rejected.

US President Donald Trump, speaking from the Oval Office on Tuesday, confirmed Zelensky's upcoming visit. "I hear that he's coming on Friday. Certainly, it's fine with me if he'd like to come, and he wants to sign it together with me. It’s a very big deal," Trump stated.

When asked about what Ukraine would gain from the agreement, Trump responded, "$350 billion, lots of military equipment, and the right to fight on."

Trump also mentioned that the deal on rare earth minerals and other resources had been largely negotiated, with further discussions on Ukraine’s security arrangements to follow. "I spoke with Russia about it. They didn't seem to have a problem with it. So I think they understand—once we do this, they’re not going back in," he added.

There has been no official confirmation from the US government regarding the finalized terms of the agreement.

The United States is seeking access to Ukraine’s critical minerals as part of ongoing negotiations to bring an end to the conflict. Meanwhile, Ukraine has been pushing for concrete security guarantees to safeguard against any future Russian aggression.
