Mumbai, Mar 2: With the Modi government’s policies fostering an environment conducive to innovation, India is set to lead the Artificial Intelligence (AI) revolution, said commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal at the Mumbai Tech Week 2025.
Expressing confidence in Mumbai’s potential, Goyal stated, “Mumbai can become India’s tech hub with the incredible investments being made in infrastructure, capital, and skilled talent.” He highlighted the city’s strong digital ecosystem, which makes it a natural contender for emerging as a global technology powerhouse.

India has already established itself as a frontrunner in AI adoption, recording three billion AI-related app downloads in 2024, far surpassing the US (1.5 billion) and China (1.3 billion). Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella termed India as the “use case capital of AI”, emphasizing that the country is not just researching AI but deploying it on a massive scale.
At the AI Action Summit in Paris, which India co-chaired with France last month, Prime Minister Narendra Modi stressed the need for AI to be ethical, inclusive, and trustworthy. Calling AI a “global responsibility,” he advocated for democratizing technology to ensure equitable access, particularly for the Global South.
PM Modi also highlighted India’s success in building a Digital Public Infrastructure for its 1.4 billion citizens and announced that India will host the next AI Summit. Furthermore, he revealed that India is developing its own large language model tailored to its diverse linguistic and cultural needs.
With a robust AI strategy and a strong push for ethical innovation, India is poised to reshape the global AI landscape, ensuring that technology serves humanity responsibly and inclusively.
