Maharashtra assembly may consider tougher laws for women’s safety: Ram Kadam

Daijiworld Media Network – Mumbai

Mumbai, Mar 2: In the wake of growing concerns over women’s safety, senior BJP leader Ram Kadam on Sunday hinted that the upcoming Maharashtra Assembly session could see discussions on stricter laws to protect women. His statement follows the recent incident of harassment involving Union Minister of State Raksha Khadse's daughter during the Maha Shivratri Mela in Jalgaon on February 28.

Speaking to Daijiworld, Kadam reassured that the state government is committed to ensuring security for all citizens, irrespective of their status. "Whether it is a common citizen, a politician, or an actor, our government will take strict action against wrongdoers," he stated.

Kadam’s comments came as the Jalgaon Police confirmed the arrest of one of the seven accused involved in the harassment case. Several young girls, including Raksha Khadse’s daughter, were allegedly harassed during a yatra in Kothali village, Muktainagar.

The BJP leader also called for swift action in the murder case of Haryana Congress worker Himani Narwal, stressing that every woman deserves justice and respect. He accused the Congress of ignoring crimes against women and pointed towards the alleged criminal records of certain leaders within the party.

Addressing concerns over women’s safety in Maharashtra, Kadam supported suggestions to review the Shakti Bill, which was passed in 2021 to strengthen laws against crimes targeting women and children.

"Every necessary step will be taken. We will work with the Opposition to ensure that women feel safe in our state," he assured, emphasizing Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’ commitment to law and order.

On the political front, Kadam dismissed recent reports in ‘Saamana’, the mouthpiece of Uddhav Bal Thackeray’s Shiv Sena, that hinted at tensions within the ruling alliance.

"Saamana and its leaders have made a habit of making false predictions," he remarked, stating that all three coalition partners in the government are focused on serving the people.

Kadam also downplayed speculation regarding Aditya Thackeray being named Leader of the Opposition, questioning whether senior NCP leader Sharad Pawar would support such a move.

"Ultimately, it is up to the Opposition to decide," he said, hinting at concerns over Thackeray’s leadership maturity.
