Mumbai, Mar 3: In response to the recent Pune bus rape case that has sparked outrage across Maharashtra, Shiv Sena leader Manisha Kayande has written to Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik, urging immediate measures to enhance women's safety in public transportation.
The shocking incident, where a 26-year-old woman was raped inside a Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) bus at Pune's Swargate depot, led to public fury over security lapses. The accused, Dattatray Gade, was arrested on Friday after being on the run for nearly a week.
Expressing concern over the safety of women passengers, Kayande demanded urgent reforms, stating that the Swargate incident exposed serious gaps in security. She emphasized the need for CCTV cameras in all state transport buses, the deployment of security personnel at every bus depot, and the removal of old and unsafe vehicles from service.

Highlighting the role of surveillance in preventing crimes, Kayande stressed that CCTV installations would help in quickly identifying and prosecuting offenders, ensuring a safer environment for women commuters.
She also addressed the recent molestation case involving Union Minister of State Raksha Khadse's daughter, calling it an unfortunate incident but reaffirming that Maharashtra remains relatively safe for women. She praised the swift police response, stating that strict action must be taken against all accused, irrespective of their identity.
Meanwhile, Maharashtra Minister Shamburaj Desai condemned the molestation case and assured that all perpetrators would be swiftly brought to justice. He stated that Chief Minister Eknath Shinde had ordered strict action, emphasizing that any harassment against women, including the minister’s daughter, was unacceptable.
The Jalgaon police have so far arrested three individuals—Aniket Bhoyi, Kiran Mali, and Anuj Patil—along with a minor, in connection with the case. Charges have been filed against seven suspects, and efforts are underway to apprehend the remaining accused.
The series of disturbing incidents has intensified demands for stronger security measures in public transport, with leaders urging immediate action to prevent future crimes and ensure women's safety in Maharashtra.
